NEW PALTZ, NY -- Freshman pitcher Ginny Sack (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) improved to 5-0 with a three hit shutout in the second game and shortstop Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had three hits and three RBIs to lead Union to an 11-0 five-inning shutout at SUNY New Paltz in the second contest Monday. The Dutchwomen lost the opener, 6-2.
Union now stands 12-6 on the season, while New Paltz stands 5-13.
Sack walked two and struck out two in the victory. Rogers led a 12-hit attack in the nightcap, that also featured two hits each by hometown native Megan Bordino (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz), Diana Polli (Chester, NY/Burke Catholic) and Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY/NFA). Union scored two in the second and three runs in the third, fourth and fifth to put the game away.
Bordino and Bridget Graham (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) drove in two runs each in the triumph.
The Hawks led 1-0 in the first inning of the opener, and Union tied it in the top of the fourth on a home run by Kaknis, her team leading sixth of the season. But the Hawks took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the stanza. Union pulled to within one on an RBI single by Lindsay Larabee (Westfield, MA/Westfield) in the sixth. But the Hawks put three on the board to open up the lead in their half of the sixth.
Kelly O'Hea got the win with a nine-hitter that feautred no walks and two strikeouts for New Paltz. Union freshman Tiffany Ippoliti (Schuylerville, NYShuylerville) took the loss, giving up 10 hits and five earned runs. The freshman did strike out five in the contest.
Kaknis and Colleen White (Westport, CT/Staples) had two hits each for the Dutchwomen, while Erin Fitzpatrick led the Hwks with three hits and two RBIs.
Union plays another non-league twinbill Wednesday at Utica at 3 p.m.
