OSWEGO, NY - The Oswego State softball team lost a pair of close games against visiting Union College in the final home games of the season. Union won the first game 9-8 and the second game 3-0. The Lakers are now 6-21 on the year, while Union improved to 25-7.
Union scored four runs in the top of the first and added five in the top of the fourth to get the win. Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY/NFA) led the way with three hits and two runs scored. Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY/Clarence) had two hits including a three-run homer in the fourth, and Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) and Lindsay Larabee (Westfield, MA/Westfield) each drove in two runs.
Oswego State's tied the game with four runs in the bottom of the second inning, taking advantage of two errors by Union. After falling behind by five, the Lakers came back with a single run in the fourth, two in the fifth and one in the sixth. Kelly Cooper had three hits for Oswego State and Jessica Mills, Jillian Burns, Ashley Mead, and Heather Merino had two hits each.
Union pitcher Ginny Sack (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) had the save in the opener by pitching a scoreless inning and a third in relief of starter Tiffany Ippoliti (Schuylerville, NY/Schuylerville). Oswego State's Kaitlyn Thibodeau took the loss in relief of Michelle Jackson.
A complete-game six-hit shutout by Sack and solo home runs by Rogers and Kielb led Union to the win in the second game. Kielb was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs in the game. Carolyn Agle had three hits for the Lakers and Sarah Castaldo had a pair of singles. Laura Agle started and pitched four innings and took the loss. Erika Ayers pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on five hits.
Union ends the regular season Saturday at Rochester for a Liberty League doubleheader.
