FT. MYERS, FL -- The Union College softball team opened up the 2008 season with a 7-2 victory over SUNY Fredonia Sunday. The Dutchwomen later lost to Wisconsin-Whitewater, 3-0.
Sophomore pitcher Tiffany Ippoliti (Schuylerville, NY) pitched a complete-game six hitter in allowing in the win over the Blue Devils. She walked just two batters and struck out one. Cristina Reale took the loss for Fredonia, giving up 10 hits and three earned runs.
Senior Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY) led the Dutchwomen at the plate with three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs. Her two-run triple in the fourth inning erased a 1-0 Fredonia lead. Union added three more in the sixth featuring two runs coming on an error and another on a wild pitch. Kaitlin Graham (Orchard Park, NY) drove in another run in the seventh.
In the nightcap, Ginny Sack (Burnt Hills, NY) allowed six Whitewater hits, while Kielb had three hits in three at bats. Niki Shulty allowed seven hits and, like Sack, struck out eight.
Union is 1-1 after the 3-0 loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater. Monday's schedule features games against DePauw and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
