FT. MYERS, FL -- The Union softball squad scored 11 runs in the third inning and downed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 19-3 in non-league softball action Tuesday. The Dutchwomen, after losing to DePauw, 3-0, now stand 2-2 after two days in Florida.
In the win over MIT, junior first baseman Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY) and junior shortstop Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY) each had three hits for the Dutchwomen. Kaknis hit her first homer of the young season, and had three RBIs. She led Union with 15 round trippers and hit .512 last season. Megan Bordino (New Paltz, NY) and Lindsey Larabee (Westfield, MA) had two hits and two RBIs each for Union.
Freshman pitcher Catherine Ferrara (Port Jefferson, NY) won her first game of her Union career, as the victorious pitcher against MIT. She allowed five hits and struck out three in the five inning game that ended due to the 10-run rule after MIT's batted in the fifth inning.
In the other game of the day, Depauw improved to 14-1 behind the three-hit, nine strikeout pitching of Megan Soultz. Ashlee Anton drove in two with a first-inning single and another with a base hit in the third. Chelsy Patterson collected three hits and Anton finished with two for the Tigers. Tiffany Ippoliti (Schuylerville, NY) took the loss for the Dutchwomen, allowing six hits while striking out three.
Union's schedule Wednesday features morning games against Alvernia and Middlebury.
