Skidmore sweeps baseball, 7-6, 11-4

Scott Carroll hit his first home run of the season
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The Skidmore College baseball team took a Liberty League doubleheader from Union College Sunday afternoon at Castle Diamond, 7-6 and 11-4. Union (2-13, 0-11 Liberty) was ahead in the first game, but surrendered three runs in the sixth inning, two coming on an Anthony Ferri home run. Skidmore (13-8, 6-6 Liberty) jumped out to a five-run lead before allowing four runs on two-run home runs from Scott Carroll (Scituate, Mass.) and Pat Wilson (Cos Cob, Conn.) in game two.

Union got most of its scoring in the first game from the bottom of the order, led by Dane Flavin (Schenectady, N.Y.) who went 3-for-3 with a stand-up double and a pair of runs scored. Ryan Bowes (Hamilton, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with two stolen bases and two runs scored and Jeff Lounsbury (Stamford, Conn.) had a two-run single.

After spotting Skidmore a run in the second, the Dutchmen responded for three runs on four hits in the top of the third, and then took a 5-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, sparked by Flavin's leadoff double.

The Thoroughbreds got three runs back in the bottom of the fourth on three hits, an error and a wild pitch, plating two on a Rob Rubenstein single to center.

Paul Mene (Falls Church, Va.) hit a two-out single to shortstop in the bottom of the fifth and came around to score on Flavin's third hit of the game to give Union a 6-4 lead.

Colin McKelligan (Canton, Mass.) took to the mound in the fifth, and after walking the leadoff batter, retired the rest of the batters in order. In the sixth, however, Skidmore's Justin Morelli led off with a single to left field before Anthony Ferri hit a home run over the left field fence to tie the game, 6-6. Later in the inning with two outs and one on, Adam Brown singled down the left field line to plate Jeremy Goldman for the winning run.

Tom Gruber came on the pitch the seventh for Skidmore, retiring the Dutchmen in order to record his first save of the season.

Matt Sheehan (Lexington, Mass.) allowed one earned run on six hits in four innings for Union. Derek Stork (1-3) earned the win for the Thoroughbreds allowing two hits and one run in 1.2 innings of relief.

In game two, Skidmore got four unearned runs off starter Roy Erisken (South Nyack, N.Y.) in the bottom of the first, but in the next inning, Greg Carlow's single to center plated Rubenstein to hold a five-run lead.

Union's bats came alive in the top of the third with four hits and two-run homers from Carroll and Wilson. Carroll's was the first on the year for the senior, while Wilson's marked a team-leading third on the season for the centerfielder.

Skidmore added another run off Eriksen, who took the loss (0-2), before tagging reliever Greg Wyman (Wilton, Conn.) with three on three hits over the final four innings.

Union continues Liberty League action with a 2 p.m. makeup doubleheader against Clarkson on Tuesday, April 15 at Central Park.
