Dutchmen split with Clarkson to snap streak, Brown throws three-hit shutout

Andy Brown
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team split a Liberty League doubleheader with Clarkson Tuesday afternoon at Central Park. The Dutchmen dropped the first game, 7-2, before rallying behind a complete game three-hit shutout by sophomore Andy Brown (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) to win the nightcap, 4-0. The win snapped a 12-game losing streak for the Dutchmen, who picked up their first conference win of the season and improve to 3-14 overall.

In his fifth career appearance, Brown struck out four and held the Golden Knights hitless over four innings after giving up one to Cale Giroux to lead off the top of the first.

Ryan Bowes (Hamilton, N.J.) plated Colin McKelligan (Canton, Mass.) in the second inning before Brian McLaughlin (Norwood, N.J.) got across in the third after a pair of errors and one of two steals on the day for the junior.

Zach Tillo's (Lancaster, Mass.) two-run double up the middle gave the Dutchmen a four-run lead in the bottom of the fifth and Brown allowed a pair of singles over the final two innings to secure his first career win – and complete game – on the mound.

Austin Pitkin (2-3) took the loss for the Golden Knights, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits while striking out three in five innings.

In the first game, Union took a brief one-run lead on a Tillo sac fly in the bottom of the first inning, but Clarkson responded with four runs on four hits in the top of the third, including RBI doubles from Matt Holiday and Brady Torbitt. Brett Peplowski got the scoring started with a sac fly to right.

The Golden Knights added two more in the next inning on three hits before Union got one back in the bottom of the frame on a Paul Mene (Falls Church, Va.) RBI single. Clarkson capped the scoring in the top of the seventh with a Pitkin RBI double.

Jeremy LeFebvre (Cheshire, Mass.) took the loss (0-1), allowing six runs (five earned) on seven hits through three innings. David Arouca (Wilmette, Ill.) gave up one run on five hits while striking out three in the final four innings.

Greg Chojecki (3-1) allowed two unearned runs on six hits while striking out three in the complete game win.

Union continues Liberty League action this weekend against cross-town rival RPI. The teams meet at Rensselaer for a doubleheader Saturday at noon before playing at Joe Bruno Stadium for a pair of games Sunday at noon.
