ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Left-handers Steve Guzski and Michael Park produced strong outings this afternoon as the University of Rochester swept a doubleheader from Union College. The Yellowjackets won game one, 15-2, and took the nitecap, 8-1.
Rochester improved to 14-3 overall, 8-0 in the Liberty League. Union is 2-5 overall, 0-3 in the Liberty League. The teams will play another doubleheader at 2 p.m. Sunday at Central Park in Schenectady.
Guzski pitched a complete game six-hitter in the opener for his first win this season. He walked two and struck out three. Park pitched 6.2 innings of three-hit ball to earn his second win this year. He allowed one earned run, walked four and struck out nine.
The Yellowjackets produced 15 hits in game one, led by home runs from Ed Kahovec and Nate Stein. Ryan Sullivan was 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Stein was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI.
Rochester broke it open with four runs in the third and fifth in the fifth. Dan Brien hit a two-run single in the third to make it 3-0. Stein started the fourth with a home run to left field. After Andy Cannon tripled in a run, Kahovec homered to left center. Brien tripled and was doubled home by Sullivan.
Guzski allowed only one hit over the first five innings – a single by
Pat Wilson (Cos Cob, Conn.). He walked two and two others got aboard by errors. Union finally broke through for two runs in the sixth. With two outs, Wilson doubled.
Colin McKelligan (Canton, Mass.) doubled him home and scored on a base hit by
Brian Goldman (Pittsford, N.Y.).
Matt Sheehan (Lexington, Mass.) allowed eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings while striking out four and walking one. He drops to 1-1 on the season.
In the nitecap, the Yellowjackets scored single runs in five of the first seven innings to build a 5-1 lead. Canno, and Dave Kloc had two RBI apiece.
Park cruised for five innings – striking out nine men and holding the Dutchmen hitless before
Andy Brown (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) broke up the no hitter with a single leading off the sixth.
Scott Carroll (Scituate, Mass.) walked and then Park induced
Zach Tillo (Lancaster, Mass.) to bounce into a 1-6-3 double play before retiring Wilson on a fly to right to end the inning with a 3-0 lead.
Union scored in the seventh. With one out,
Jeffrey Lounsbury (Stamford, Conn.) singled.
Shawn Johnston (Hamilton, N.J.) doubled him to third and he scored on a groundout by
Dane Flavin (Schenectady, N.Y.). Park was replaced by Paul Toland who retired four straight before John Fishback worked a scoreless ninth.
Cannon stole home in the first inning for Rochester's first run. Kloc singled home Jay Jay Vanderstyne in the fourth and Brien in the sixth. Vanderstyne's sac fly in the seventh plated Jim Bard. In the eighth, Cannon tripled to deep center, scoring two more runs.
Brian McLaughlin (Norwood, N.J.) transitioned to the mound from playing left field for the nitecap and shouldered the loss for the Dutchmen, going 7.1 innings. He gave up seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits in his second loss of the season.
