Dutchwomen now winners of 10 straight after softball sweep over New Paltz

Lindsay Larabee is now hitting .517 this season.

SCHENECTADY, NY – For the second straight day, sophomore pitcher Ginny Sack (Burnt Hills, NY) won both games of a doubleheader and senior outfielder Lindsay Larabee (Westfield, MA) had five hits, three RBIs and a home run to lead Union to a softball sweep over SUNY New Paltz at Alexander Field Monday. The Dutchwomen won the first contest, 4-3 in eight innings, then closed out game two with an 8-0 win in five innings. Union has won 10 straight and is now 11-2 while the Hawks fell to 11-11.

Sack pitched in relief of freshman starter Catherine Ferrara (Port Jefferson, NY) in the opener, and struck out two in two innings. She allowed a lead run in the top of the eighth for a 3-2 New Paltz lead when Justin Scutaro (Shoreham, NY) drove home Lauren Motzkin (Woodstock, NY) with a one out single. But the Dutchwomen won it in the bottom of the eighth. Bridget Graham (Orchard Park, NY) drove home pinch runner Callee Heywood (Innisfail, AB) from second to tie it at 3-3. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Kelly Owings (Oswego, NY) hit a comebacker that was a fielding error on the pitcher and Larabee scored the winning run on the play.

Ferrara allowed six hits and two earned runs in six innings, and struck out three. Bridget Graham had three hits and two RBIs in the win, as Union posted 11 hits in the opener. Courtney Costello (Bayport, NY) pitched the entire contest, striking out four in 7 2/3 innings. All four Union runs were unearned. Shortstop Amalia DiTrapani (Staten Island, NY) had three of the seven New Paltz hits, while Erin Fitzpatrick (Delmar, NY) drove in two runs on a single during a three-run second inning.

In the nightcap, Sack improved to 7-1 with a complete game three hitter, as Union scored five in the bottom of the fifth for the eight run lead that ended the game. Sack allowed three hits and struck out two, and has now allowed six hits in 16 innings and four games over the last two days. Union snapped a 0-0 deadlock with three in the bottom of the fourth, all coming on a one out homer to left by Larabee, her first of the season. The five run fifth featured two RBI singles by Bridget Graham and Heywood. Heywood's pinch hit two-run single ended the game.

Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY) had three hits and an RBI in the game while Larabee was 2 for 3 with the three RBIs. New Paltz starter Michelle Reinke (Smithtown, NY) took the loss, giving up five hits and three runs in four innings.

Union continues a long homestand with a doubleheader Wednesday vs. Utica at 3:30 p.m.
