SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior catcher Catherine Kielb (Rensselaer, NY) had five hits on the day but the Union College softball had an 11 game winning streak snapped in the nightcap against Utica College Wednesday at Alexander Field. The Dutchwomen won the opener, 6-0 with a complete game shutout by sophomore pitcher Tiffany Ippoliti (Schuylerville, NY), but lost game two, 6-3. The Dutchwomen are now 12-3 on the year while the Pioneers stand 10-11.
Ippoliti allowed six hits and struck out three while walking one to improve to 3-1 on the year. In the second game, Utica freshman pitcher Kristin Levin (Clifton Park, NY) evened her mark at 7-7 in a complete game win, allowing 10 hits, three earned runs and striking out four.
Union's opened the scoring in the opener when Michelle Rogers (Clarence, NY) drove home Kelly Owings (Oswego, NY) on a first inning one out ground out to second. The Dutchwomen made it 2-0 in the second when Bridget Graham (Orchard Park, NY) lined out to center for a sacrifice fly to score Kielb. The Dutchwomen added three more on four hits in the fourth against Kellie Mathis (West Leyden, NY), with an RBI double by Graham and consecutive RBI singles by Ashley Kovack (Ridgefield, NY) and Owings. Union added one more in the fifth on an RBI single by Kielb, her third hit of the game. Mathis scattered 11 hits, walked one and struck out one. Kim Martin (Prospect, NY) had two of the Pioneers' hits.
Sophomore pitcher Ginny Sack (Burnt Hills, NY), who had won four games since Sunday, started the game for Union and the Pioneers scored four runs on three hits in the fourth. Union had a 2-0 lead in the third on and RBI double by Megan Kaknis (New Windsor, NY) and RBI single by Kielb. The Pioneers' fourth featured two walks and an error, but Claire Gerlach (South Williamsville, NY) had a two-run double to highlight the big inning. Rinae Olsen (Schenectady, NY) and Cecily Rowland (Queensbury, NY) had back-to-back RBI hits in the fifth. Union scored once in the bottom of that stanza on an RBI double by Lindsey Larabee (Westfield, MA).
Sack, who had come out in the fourth but returned in the fifth, gave up six hits and four runs while striking out four in 5 2/3 innings. Ippoliti allowed four hits in 1 1/3 innings of middle relief. Rowland had three hits and Kourtney Kupiec (Whitesboro, NY) and Abby Drew (South Glens Falls, NY) had two hits each for the Pioneers. Alexandra King (Chester Springs, PA) had two of Union's 10 hits in the loss.
Union is home again Saturday for a non-league twinbill against Southern Vermont at 1 p.m.
