SCHENECTADY, NY – Union College men's ice hockey senior defenseman Mike Wakita will serve as the Dutchmen's captain for the 2009-10 season, head coach Nate Leaman announced on Monday during the team's annual media day. Leaman also announced a rotating alternate captain system that will see seniors Jason Walters and Mike Schreiber and juniors Andrew Buote, Brock Matheson and Adam Presizniuk share the “A” throughout the season.
Wakita, a four-year member of the team, has played in 71 games for Union, posting eight points as a defenseman. During his time at Union he has helped post a 2.77 goals-against average. In 2008-09, Wakita appeared in 34 games, posting two goals and two assists.
Walters and Schreiber are also four-year letterwinners. Walters has played 105 games for the garnet and white, scoring 26 goals and posting 49 assists. Schreiber, an offensive defenseman, has posted 49 points with 40 assists in 108 career games.
Buote, Matheson and Presizniuk each enter their third seasons at Union. Buote has five goals and two assists in 69 games and continues to be one of the Dutchmen's top penalty killers. Matheson, a defenseman, has played in 62 games, producing seven points with six assists. Presizniuk is coming off the most successful season in program history, setting the school record for points in a season with 38. For his career he has 23 goals and 40 assists in 74 games.
The Dutchmen open the 2009-10 season against Maine on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. at Messa Rink.
