ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Sophomore
Kaleigh Ahern sets a new pool record as the Union College swimming & diving team finished third after completing the second leg of the Liberty League Championships on Saturday.
For her performance, Ahern was selected as Liberty League Swimmer of the Year.
Host University of Rochester won the championship with a score of 758 points with Rensselaer taking second with 486 points and Union scored 418 points.
On Friday, Ahern turned in a time of 24.47 in the 50-yard freestyle to break the record set in 1991 by a swimmer from the University of Buffalo. Ahern went on to win the seventh event.
Ahern also won the 500-yard IM with a time of 2:14.35, besting Vassar's Shannon Caroline's time of 2:16.07.
At the end of the first session on Friday, Union was in second with 222 points while Rochester was leading with 338 points.

Meredith Nearpass finished second in the one-meter dive with a score of 360.25.
For the first time in school history, the University of Rochester women's swimming and diving team has been crowned Liberty League Champions. The Yellowjackets finished with 1017 points, 383 points ahead of second place RPI.
Rochester's coaching staff was selected as Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year. The men's swimming and diving team also finished first in the Liberty League Championship.
Entering the third and final session of the weekend, Rochester held a 272 point lead over RPI.
In the first event of session III, the 200 yard backstroke, Val Atwood finished in 2:12.05, good for second place. Christi Champagne (2:15.24) was fifth.
In the 100 yard freestyle, the Yellowjackets placed two swimmers in the top three, highlighted by Emily Scott's first place finish. Scott touched the wall in 55.07. Dayna Jacob (55.46) missed second place by just 0.06 seconds.
Jennifer Chung placed second in the 200 yard breaststroke while teammates Bridget Festa and Aoi Wakabayashi placed fifth and seventh, respectively.
In the 200 yard butterfly, Rochester's Stephanie Bolin grabbed first place with a time of 2:13.64. Megan Lawless finished six seconds behind her in fourth place.
The final event of the meet was the 400 yard freestyle relay. Dayna Jacob, Megan Lawless, Corinne Lampe, and Emily Scott combined to finish in first place, two seconds ahead of second place Union. All four swimmers swam their respective legs in under 56.50.
The Rochester women nearly went wire-to-wire in the victory, taking the lead in the second event of the meet, the 500 yard freestyle. It was a lead they would never relinquish.
