Women's Swimming & Diving Posts Largest Win in 19 Years

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College women's swimming & diving team won the first 12 events of the meet against SUNY New Paltz in Alumni Gym Pool Friday night, defeating the Hawks 175-76.

Union's 99-point win marked its largest margin of victory since a 101-point beat down over Hartwick on Jan. 6, 2007. The Garnet Chargers would have also won the final two events of the meet Friday, but head men's and women's swimming & diving coach Molly Chamberlin entered her student-athletes in the 200 individual medley and 200 freestyle relay as exhibitions with the meet already decided. Junior Jess Konsky posted the fastest 200 IM of the meet with a 2:18.25, and first-years Maggie Reale, Mya Schattin, Julia Garber, and senior Alison Silver teamed up for a 1:32.96 in the evening's final relay.

Garber won two more events, championing the 1,000 freestyle (12:03.73) and the 100 butterfly (1:02.07).

First-year Ali Sweeney also secured a pair of individual-event victories, winning the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.80 and touching the wall first in the 200 breaststroke (2:41.50).

First-year Cate Kavanaugh and Silver both posted a pair of lifetime-best swims. Kavanaugh reached her milestones in the 200 freestyle (2:11.52) and the 200 butterfly (2:34.68), placing fourth and second, respectively. Junior Samantha Picciotti won the 200 fly (2:23.30), and junior Amelia Dino won the 200 free (2:07.35). Silver's lifetime-bests were during a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:09.88), won by junior Sarah Ramirez (1:08.03), and a third-place performance in the 500 freestyle (5:57.45). She was just beaten out by Dino (5:52.07) and Kavanaugh (5:52.45) in that race.

First-year Mya Schattin secured the fifth lifetime-best of the meet for Union, finishing third in the 100 fly (1:06.90).

The Garnet Chargers finished the regular season 6-6 and will compete in the Liberty League championships, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 18. The four-day meet is held in Ithaca, N.Y.
