SCHENECTADY, NY -- Union's softball team opened the home season with a comeback victory vs. SUNY Oneonta in the opener, 5-4. But the Dutchwomen fell 12-5 in the nightcap in a non-league doubleheader at Alexander Field Wednesday. The Dutchwomen are now 10-2 while the Red Dragons stand 11-9.
In game one, the Dutchwomen entered the bottom of the seventh trailing, 4-3.
Kaitlin Graham reached on a throwing error, and was bunted over to second.
Megan Bordino then singled up the middle to put Graham to third. After a comebacker to the pitcher for the second out put Bordino to second,
Michelle Rogers reached on a throwing error and both runners scored for the walk-off win.
Megan Kaknis and Bordino each had two of Union's eight hits in the triumph, Union's ninth straight of the young season.
Nina Cervini drove in two runs. Ginny Sack, who entered the game not allowing a run of any kind in 28 innings, improved to 5-0. She gave up five hits and two earned runs while striking out two.
Oneonta had five players with one hit each and pitcher Jillian Sullivan (Glens Falls, NY) fell to 2-4 with the loss after giving up eight hits and three earned runs while striking out one.
The Red Dragons jumped out to a big and early lead, with a nine run first inning. The game was called after five due to darkness and weather conditions. Oneonta had 11 hits, highlighted by Beth Truax (South Glens Falls, NY) and Jamie Llewellyn (Oneonta, NY). Truax had two hits and two RBIs while Llewellyn had a homer with another hit in the victory. Also starring for the guests were Katie Hackenburg (Queensbury, NY), who had two RBIs, and Aly Helstrom (Montgomery, NY), who drove in two with two hits. Jessica Bartalsky (New Paltz, NY) earned her fourth win in five decisions for Oneonta, giving up seven hits and five earned runs with three strikeouts in the contest.
Union was led by Rogers, who blasted her first homer of the season and finished three for three with 2 RBIs. The senior shortstop is now hitting .488 on the season.
Union travels to the College of Staten Island for a doubleheader Saturday. The start time is 12 p.m., changed from the original 2 p.m. start.
