Dutchmen Sweep Doubleheader Against SUNYIT

SCHENECTADY, NY –
The Union College baseball team took two games from SUNYIT with 3-2 and a 7-6 wins on Wednesday. Junior pitcher Andy Brown went the distance during the first game, striking out three, while junior right fielder Paul Mene had a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh, scoring senior centerfielder Pat Wilson, who led off the inning with a double, to end the game

Union moves to 8-16 with the wins, while SUNYIT goes to 10-18.

Game two appeared to be turning into an offensive shootout with the teams combining for 12 runs through the first three-and-a-half innings. Enter senior pitcher Brian McLaughlin and the Dutchmen shutdown SUNYIT, allowing no hits in the final three innings.

In the bottom of the seventh, Wilson roped one down the leftfield line to get to second. Brown followed with a bunt single and Mene ended the game sending a pitch-out attempt into right field.

Mene went 1-for-3 during game two with two RBI and a run scored. Junior catcher Justin Real led the team, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run.

Freshman third baseman Kevin Dexter also had two RBI and he went 1-for-2 with a run. 

During game one, Brown stumped SUNYIT's seventh-inning rally by whiffing J. Marsden with the tying run at third. Brown, is now 2-2.

 He got support by nifty base running by sophomore leftfielder Jarid Hotaling, who reached base to lead off the game. He stole second and took third and home on two separate pass balls to give Union a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Sophomore first baseman Dane Flavin led off the second with a single to right center and after advancing to third, he was driven in with a sacrifice fly by Bowes.

The Dutchmen's third and final run came with a two-out, RBI double by senior DH Josh McKelligan in the bottom of the fourth.

SUNYIT threatened in the top of the seventh with a leadoff single by freshman Anthony Surber, who scored two batters later with on a routine 4-3 play. Freshman Patrick Baker followed Surber with a single to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly by pinch hitter Marr, setting the stage for Brown's three-strikes heroics.

Union returns to action with a 2 p.m. doubleheader against St. Lawrence on Saturday, Apr. 25.
