Graham and pitchers lead softball to sweep at New Paltz

NEW PALTZ, NY -- Bridget Graham had two hits in each game and added three RBIs and Ginni Sack and Tiffany Ippoliti each did not allow an earned run in their complete games as Union swept New Paltz, 6-2 and 5-1 (in nine innings) in a non-league softball doubleheader at Mary Gray Deane Field Thursday. The Dutchwomen are now 21-5 on the season while the Hawks fell to 19-19.

In the opener, Union trailed 2-1 after five but scored four runs in the sixth, highlighted by a two run double by Graham. Alexandra King had three hits in the contest, including a triple, as Union posted 11 hits. Ginni Sack now stands 9-2 after allowing six hits and two unearned runs while striking out one. 

Devon Kelly took the loss for New Paltz, as she went the route while allowing five earned runs and striking out four. She also had two of the Hawks' six hits in the game.

Ippoliti gave up just five hits and one unearned run to win her seventh in nine decisions. The junior struck out nine, a season high. Graham had two hits and an RBI. Ippoliti and New Patlz pitcher Courtney Costello locked up in an impressive pitching duel, keeping the game scoreless through seven innings. Both teams scratched across a run in the eighth, but Union exploded for four in the ninth highlighted by a bases clearing, 3 RBI double by pinch hitter Ashley Kovack. It was one of just six hits off Costello, who gave up three earned runs and struck out one but walked four.

Union will resume Liberty League play Saturday at Alexander Field, when the Dutchwomen host Skidmore at 1 p.m.
