SCHENECTADY, NY -- The Union College softball team swept Liberty League rival Skidmore, 4-2 and 14-0 Saturday at Alexander Field. The Dutchwomen are now 23-5 overall and 2-2 in the league, while the Thoroughbreds fell to 18-11 and 0-4.
Ashley Kovack had four hits and six RBIs on the day, including a grand slam in the second game.
Union got four runs in the third inning of the first game in support of
Ginni Sack. The junior improved to 10-2 and retired the first 13 batters she faced until the perfect game was broken up by Caitlin Ketchum (North Clarendon, VT) with a double in the fifth. Sack allowed two earned runs and struck out seven in the five hitter.
Lucia Reed had two of Union's 11 hits, while Kovack and
Megan Kaknis highlighted the fourth inning with RBI doubles.
Sam Crose (Assonet, MA) took the loss for Skidmore, but struck out three in her six innings of work. Darren Jarvis (Harvard, MA) had two of the hits for the Thoroughbreds.
Game two featured explosive early innings for the Dutchwomen. They scored five in the first, seven in the third and tacked on two more in the fourth. The first inning featured a leadoff homer by
Bridget Graham (her second home run of '09) and later the grand slam home run by Kovack, her first homer of the season. Graham also had a two run double in the big third inning that sent 12 batters to the plate, and
Allie Sirrine drove in both fourth inning runs with a double.
Tiffany Ippoliti is now 8-2 after her four innings of two hit, shutout pitching. She posted four strikeouts.
Lindsay Colvin pitched the fifth. Crose, the starter for the guests, took the loss and is now 15-8, while Molly Canavan (Blue Bell, PA) pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief.
Union will have road doubleheaders Tuesday at Oswego and Wednesday at Utica before returning home Friday, May 1 to host RPI at 3:30 p.m.
