SCHENECTADY, NY – Senior centerfielder
Pat Wilson came within a triple of hitting for the cycle in Union's 4-1, game one win against St. Lawrence during Sunday's doubleheader. The Saints rebounded with a 7-6, ninth-inning win in the second game. Union's record now stands at 9-19 overall and 4-13 in the Liberty League, while St. Lawrence goes to 16-15 and 9-11 in the conference.
Wilson provided the offense during game one, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored. He had a two-out double in the first inning to score junior second baseman/pitcher
Andy Brown. Wilson's next at bat, in the top of the third, he sent a bomb over the leftfield fence for his third long ball of the year.
Union added to its lead with two runs in the second with a two-out RBI triple by sophomore leftfielder
Jarid Hotaling, who scored when senior DH
Shawn Johnston singled through the left side.
Senior
Josh McKelligan went the distance on the bump, striking out three to improve to 1-2. St. Lawrence's Chris Cook also threw the whole game, whiffing nine. He is now 4-2.
The Saints lone run came in the fourth inning when Tim Harris went yard with one out.
During game two, Johnston sent a three-run shot over the centerfield fence in the top of the third, helping sophomore shortstop
Jared Henkel and Hotaling cross the plate.
The Saints responded in the bottom half of the when Bryan Brennan (Randolph, NJ/Delbarton School) scored on an RBI single by Ryan Duff, who made it 3-2 when Kirt Broedel grounded out to second. A passed ball led to the Saints tying the score at 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth.
Then an error with one out in the bottom of the sixth led to St. Lawrence taking a 5-4 lead despite Hotalings throwing efforts which nearly got Kirk Shimkin at the plate. Sam Kelly drove in a run with a two-out single to move the score to 5-3.
Freshman third baseman
Kevin Dexter evened the score with a double down the leftfield line to score Wilson and freshman DH
Nicholas Ranalli. Wilson led off the inning with a double and Ranalli reached on base-on-balls. Josh McKelligan was called upon to pinch hit and he doubled to left-center to score Dexter from second and give Union the go-ahead run (6-5).
The Saints shutdown the Union offense the rest of the way and won it in the bottom of the ninth with RBIs by Duff and Harris. The game-winning hit came with a double by Harris to right field.
Saint's pitcher Matt Landers earned the win in his 1.2 innings of work. He struck out five. The Dutchmen used four pitchers and sophomore Jeremy LeFebrve was credited with the loss despite whiffing four batters in three innings.
The Dutchmen return to action on Wednesday, Apr. 29 for a 4 p.m. contest at Hamilton.
