CLINTON, NY -- Union College scored three runs in the top of the 11th inning and the Dutchmen held on for a 16-13 win in 11 innings against Hamilton College in a non-conference baseball game played at Royce Field on April 29.
The 4 hour, 1 minute marathon featured 35 hits, including 10 doubles, 12 errors and a catcher's interference call. Union (10-19 overall) rallied from early 7-3 and 9-8 deficits. The Continentals (13-19) fell behind 13-10 after allowing three runs in the top of the 10th, but roared back with three runs in the bottom of the inning to force the 11th.
In the 11th,
Jarid Hotaling led off with a double to right center and then stole third base.
Andy Brown singled through the left side to score the sophomore.
Pat Wilson cracked a two-run homer over the net in left field against Andrew Perkowski for some insurance runs.
Shawn Johnston followed with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but was stranded after a fly ball to right field and a pop-up to the first baseman.
Jeremy Lefebvre didn't need the insurance runs as he picked up his first save. Lefebvre allowed a one-out double to Pat Gennaco, but retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a grounder to short to finally end the game.
Kevin Dexter came on in relief in the eighth inning and recorded his first win. Dexter allowed one earned run on three hits, walked none and struck out two in three innings.
Wilson finished with three hits, three RBI and three runs scored to lead the Dutchmen offense. Hotaling also ended up with three hits. Dexter doubled, homered and drove in two runs as the designated hitter. Brown scored three runs and
Dane Flavin smacked a three-run homer in the third inning.
Foster (5-2) pitched one inning and took the loss just 24 hours after pitching five shutout innings in a 7-4 Continentals' victory against SUNY Institute of Technology. He allowed two runs on three hits, walked one and fanned one.
Grady Vigneau hit three doubles and drove in three runs for Hamilton. Sam Choate singled twice, doubled and had two RBI. Gideon Clark '09 had two hits and two RBI, and Alex Augustyn hit his team-high 12th double. Augustyn also tossed three innings of scoreless relief from the seventh through the ninth inning.
