Cattelier one-hitter highlights baseball split with #22 Rochester

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Andrew Catellier pitched a one-hitter in the opener as Union split a baseball doubleheader against #22 Rochester at Central Park Sunday. The Dutchmen won the first contest, 3-0 behind Catellier, but the Yellowjackets won the nightcap, 12-3. Union stands 4-9 on the season and is 1-5 in the Liberty League, while Rochester is 18-5 overall and 5-2 in the league.

Catellier allowed just a leadoff single to Nathan Stein (Rochester, NY) in the third inning. He did not allow a runner past second base and struck out three while walking threee to improve to 1-1 on the season. The top three batters in the Union order had three hits each, as Jarid Hotaling, Dane Flavin and Paul Mene combined for nine hits in 12 at bats. Each joined Ryan Bowes with an RBI and the Dutchmen had 11 hits against two Yellowjacket pitchers. Rochester starter Steven Guzski (New Hartford, NY) took the loss, allowing the three earned runs and the 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings. He struck out three and did not walk a batter.

Mene drove in the first run on a single up the middle in the first, and a sacrifice fly by Bowes plated the second run in the second stanza. Hotaling had a two-out double in the seventh and came home on an RBI single by Flavin.

The Yellowjackets exploded for nine runs in the second inning, coming on five hits and aided two Union errors. Rochester sent 14 batters to the plate in the inning, which was highlighted by a grand slam from Alex Caghan (North Canton, OH). It was more then enough support for starter and winner Paul Toland. the senior righty from South Weymouth, MA struck out seven and allowed five hits in eight innings for his fourth win in four decisions this spring. Jay Jay Vanderstyne (Victor, NY), Dan Brien (Liverpool, NY) and Matt Francis (East Amherst, NY) had two hits each in the 12 hit attack for the Yellowjackets. 

Nicholas Ranalli had three of the seven hits for the Dutchmen and Pat Wilson added two hits. Starter Jeremy LeFebvre fell to 1-2 on the season, allowing three hits and walking three in one plus inning of work.

Union will play a non-league single contest at SUNYIT in Utica on Wednesday at 4 p.m., and will return to league play Friday against Skidmore at Central Park at 2 p.m.
