SCHENECTADY, NY -- Megan Kaknis had two homers and five RBIs, and a walk-off homer in game two, and
Tiffany Ippoliti pitched a three hit shutout as Union earned a Liberty League softball split with RPI Friday at Alexander Field. The Dutchwomen followed up a 7-4 loss with a 9-0 win in six innings. Union is now 26-6 overall and 3-3 in the league, while the Red Hawks are also 3-3 in the league and 21-9 overall.
Ippoliti gave up just three singles and struck out two to win her 10th game against just two losses. The junior has lost just once since March 22 and lowered her season ERA to 1.00. Kaknis blasted her sixth and seventh homers of the season. Her first homer was a three run shot in the first inning that gave Ippoliti all that she would need and more. The second home run was a three run homer in the bottom of the sixth that came with two outs as the second run that came in provided the eight run margin that ended the contest.
Michelle Rogers and
Megan Bordino had two hits each.
Felicia Bua (Gilford, NH) allowed three earned runs and took the loss to fall to 8-6.
In game one, the Dutchwomen had four errors that contributed to the RPI victory, as Union pitcher
Ginni Sack allowed seven runs but only three earned. She struck out three and gave up 10 Red Hawk hits. Starter Jen Bach (Lansdale, PA) gave up eight hits and four runs, all earned, while striking out one, and she improved to 7-2. Bua allowed just two hits in 2 2/3 innings for the save.
Sara Finkbeiner (Napanoch, NY), Kelly Erkert (Burlington, NJ) and Bach had two hits each for RPI. Union was led by
Lauren Hoffman,
Megan Bordino and
Ashley Kovack, who each finished with two hits, while Kovack drove in two and had her second home run of the season.
Three of Union's errors came in the fourth, when the Red Hawks scored four runs to erase a 2-1 Union lead. Both teams produced 10 hits for the game.
The Dutchwomen close out the regular season Sunday with a doubleheader against Liberty League rival St. Lawrence at 1 p.m. at Alexander Field. After the game, six Union seniors will be honored.
