SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior pitchers Tiffany Ippoliti and Ginni Sack each recorded their eighth victories of the season and the Union bats produced 28 hits on the day as the Dutchwomen swept the University of Rochester, 12-4 and 11-0 (five innings) Sunday at Alexander Park.
Union improved to 16-6 overall and 2-0 in the Liberty League while the Yellowjackets are now 17-12, 2-2 in the league. The five Dutchwomen seniors were honored between games on this, the final weekend scheduled home games of the season. Ippoliti and Sack were joined by Lindsay Colvin, Ashley Kovack and Diana Polli. In addition, Union Coach Jordan Stevens recognized Rochester's lone senior, Juliana Nicholson (Webster, NY) during the ceremony.
In the opener, Ippoliti improved to 8-2 while allowing six hits and four earned runs in 4 1/3 innings. Sack struck out three in 1 2/3 innings of work. Alexandra King led the Dutchwomen at the plate with four hits and two RBIs, while Polli had three hits and drove in three. Lauren Hoffman, Callee Heywood and Polli added two hits each in the contest, while Nina Cervini blasted her second home run of the season.
Erin Clark (Mannsville, NY) had three of the Yellowjackets' seven hits,a nd also drove in three runs. Rochester led 2-0 in the first on a two-run triple by Clark, but the Dutchwomen tied it in the bottom of the stanza and scored two in the second and three in the third to open it up. Cervini's homer came during a four run sixth. Rochester starter Jaclyn Inglis (Shaker Heights, OH) took the loss.
In the nightcap, Hoffman and Erika Hillenbrand had three hits each and Union gave plenty of early run support for Sack. The senior pitcher did not a base runner or hit until a single with two out in the fourth, when Colvin then came in on her senior day with the 11-0 lead. Sack struck out four and is now 8-4. The Dutchwomen tallied three in the first and eight in the second, batting around in both of the first two innings. Cara Celorio (Scotia, NY) gave up six hits in 1 1/3 innings for the loss.
Union is at Middlebury Wednesday before hosting New Paltz Thursday.
