SCHENECTADY, NY – The Union College softball team swept New Paltz on Thursday afternoon. The Dutchwomen took game one 7-5 and then 8-0 in six innings during the nightcap. In the second game,
Ginni Sack earned her 58th career win to become Union's all-time wins leader, passing assistant coach Abby Arceneaux '06.
At the end of the day, Union improves to 19-7 while the Hawks fall to 13-11 on the year.
In the first game,
Allie Sirrine broke a 4-4 tie in the fifth inning by hitting a three-run shot to left field. Sirrine went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Callee Heywood went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run which she scored in the first inning.
Tiffany Ippoliti allowed three earned runs in six innings pitched. As Ippoliti earns the win and improve to 9-3 this season, Sack earned the save after relieving Ippoliti in the seventh.
Erin Fitzpatrick went 2-for-4 with an RBI and she touched all bases three times. The Hawks tied the game at four runs apiece in the fourth inning on RBI's by Fitzpatrick and Tori Kyle. Starter Courtney Costello and Gillian Davidoff each pitched three innings. Davidoff was credited the loss.
In the nightcap, Union jumped immediately to a 3-0 lead as
Nina Cervini hit a three-run home run to right center. Cervini went 1-for-4. Sirrine went 1-for-3 and drove in
Diana Polli to end the game in six innings. Sack allowed one hit in her complete game shutout to improve her season record to 10-4.
Samantha Barra hit New Paltz's only hit in the second inning on a single to right center field. Alyssa Oliva pitched five innings but was credited the loss.
Union returns to Liberty League play at Skidmore on Saturday with first pitch at 1 p.m. New Paltz returns home on Friday to face Fredonia at 3 p.m.
