ONEONTA, NY -- Ashley Kovack had two hits in each game and Tiffany Ippoliti pitched a five hitter in the nightcap as the Union softball team split a non league doubleheader at SUNY Oneonta Tuesday. Union won 5-1 after the Red Dragons won the opener, 3-1. Union is 11-5 while Oneonta is now 8-7.

In the opener, Jessica Iuliano (3-3) held the Dutchwomen to six hits, while two of the hits came from third baseman Kovack. Katie Hackenburg had two of the Red Dragons' seven hits. Oneonta broke a scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fourth off Ginni Sack (7-3). Stacey Donald had an RBI double in that inning, but the Dutchwomen tied it in the fifth with a two out RBI single by Callee Heywood.

Oneonta made it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the fifth on consecutive RBI singles by Jaclyn Liebowitz and Aly Helstrom. Iuliano allowed one earned run and struck out three with six hits in five innings, while Jillian Serraro earned the save with two hitless innings. Sack took the loss with seven hits and three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

The second game featured a complete game five-hitter by Ippoliti. She struck out five and won her third game of the season. Kovack once again had two hits, as did Samantha Chevalier and Erika Hillenbrand. Union scored one in the first on a infield ground out and another in the second on an RBI single by Hillenbrand. Union added single runs in the fifth (on an RBI double by Kovack) and sixth (a sacrifice fly by Heywood). The Dutchmen added more insurance with a sacrifice fly by Chevalier to right that was an error on the outfielder.

Union is right back in action Wednesday, this time at home. The Dutchwomen will host Utica for a twinbill at 3:30 p.m. at Alexander Field. Wednesday features "K's for Kids," a fundraising promotion for the Boys & Girls Club of Schenectady. For more information, click here.
