CLERMONT, FL -- Senior second baseman
Callee Heywood had three hits in Union College's second game of Day 1 of the 2011 softball season. The Dutchwomen opened the spring trip with a 4-3 loss to Frostburg State, and later lost in the day to Southern Maine, 9-7.
The trip, which features 12 games in Florida during the school's spring break, marks the Union mdebut of first year Head Coach Jamie Prudhomme.
In the opener, Frostburg led 3-0 in the first and 5-1 after four innings, before the Dutchwomen pulled closer with two unearned runs in the top of the seventh. Hoffman had two hits and scored a run while
Becky Gronczniak also had two hits with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman pitcher Jena Servidone made her collegiate debut for the Dtuchwomen and struck out two while allowing six hits in five innings.
Taylor Vendegrift had two hits for Frostburg, whiel Megan Magee pitched the complete game six hitter. She struck out four in the victory.
In the nightcap, Union trailed 2-0 in the third but as the home team, took the lead with three in the bottom of that inning. Both teams added a run in the fourth and it was 4-3 Union after four. The Dutchwomen tallied three runs for a 7-3 lead in the fifth, but the Huskies put six on the board and held on for the 9-7 triumph. Union's
Callee Heywood had three htis in the contest and Hoffman scored twice, while
Nina Cervini had two hits and two RBIs. Starting pitcher freshman
Amanda Blake had three hits and pitched through six and then came back in to finish the seventh after
Alyssa Wolejko made her Union pitching debut. Blake struck out five for the game.
Sarah Deroche went the route for the win for the Huskies, striking out three. Katie Davis and Deroche had two hits each and Kayla Ferrara drove in two runs with two singles.
Union faces Fontbonne Sunday at 11:30 a.m. and follows up with a game against Plymouth State at 1:30 p.m.
