Softball wraps up opening week in Florida

CLERMONT, FL --
The Union College softball team wrapped up spring break week in Florida with two games Friday. The Dutchwomen lost to Hope, 7-6 and was defeated by Allegheny, 3-2.

Hope's Michelle Mara pitched a complete game allowing eight hits and striking out one. Jo Forst, Abby Phillips and Laura Tjepkema had two hits each. Callee Heywood had two hits for the Dutchwomen.

Allegheny's Brittany Rung pitched a complete-game six-hitter, striking out three. Halea Hayden had three hits, including a double, and a stolen base, while Stephanie Fort added two hits and drove in a run with a double for the Gators.

Union was led by Becky Gronczniak, who had two hits, including a double. Lauren Hoffman continued her fine week in Florida with an RBI and a single. Allegheny had a 3-0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh, and the Dutchwomen pulled closer with and RBI double by Nina Cervini and an RBI single by Hoffman. Alyssa Wolejko pitched a complete game for the Dutchwomen, striking out eight and allowing seven hits.

The Dutchwomen return North and will play at SUNY Plattsburgh on Saturday, April 2. Union opens the home season the following day against Manhattanville at Alexander Field at 1 p.m., on Sunday, April 3.
