Softball splits at Rochester to open Liberty League play

ROCHESTER, NY --
Union College opened the 2011 Liberty League softball schedule with a split at the University of Rochester Sunday. The host Yellowjackets won the opener, 7-3, but the visiting Dutchwomen came back for a 4-3 win in the nightcap. Union is now 7-19 on the season and 1-1 in league play, while Rochester stands 20-12 overall and 3-1 in the league.

In the opener, Union's Rachel Noall had four hits in four trips to the plate and Samantha Chevalier was three for four with two RBIs. Rochester's Katie McLean had three hits and Nina Korn had two with two runs driven in. Madeline Skellie got her 10th win of the season for the Yellowjackets, striking out 11 and allowing eight hits in the complete game victory. Alyssa Woljeko gave up 10 hits and struck out three for Union.

Callee Heywood and Nina Cervini had two hits each as Union won with just six hits, and scoring three in the fourth after trailing 3-1. Amanda Blake has five hits and three strikeouts in the win.

The Dutchwomen return to action Wednesday, May 20 at 3:30 p.m. to host Middlebury at Alexander Field for "Strikeout Cancer Day." Funds will be collected at the event. On Tuesday night, softball team will team up with Hot Harry's Burritos to raise funds to fight cancer on behalf of a teammate's family member. On Tuesday, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., when you visit Hot Harry's Burritos at 1625 Union Street in Schenectady with a copy of the coupon (below), Hot Harry's will donate 15% of net food and beverage sales to the team's Strikeout Cancer efforts. Proceeds will benefit the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancer & Blood Disorders at Albany Medical Center.
