Baseball Splits with RPI

, NY- Vincent Esposito hit his first homerun of the season to lead a late Union rally as the Dutchmen defeated RPI 6-4 in the second game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Central Park. Union is now 9-15 overall and 5-11 in the Liberty League while RPI is 17-10 overall and 10-4 in the Liberty League.
 
Brendan McLaughlin went seven innings for Union giving up 10 hits, four earned runs and striking out four for his second win of the year.  Drew Amboian and Quinn Rhoda both pitched one inning of relief with Rhoda earning his third save of the season.
 
Esposito was 2-for-5 with the homerun, two runs scored, and an RBI. He also had a stolen base. Dylan Katz-Wicks was 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Dane Flavin was 3-for-4 with a double, one run scored, and an RBI.
 
Mike Campisi pitched 6 1/3 innings and gave up 12 hits, six earned runs, one walk, and struck out two. Chuck Erikson was 2-for-3 for the Engineers with two doubles, one run scored, and an RBI.
 
Union took a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Esposito led off with a single and then stole second. Katz-Wicks then bunted to move Esposito to third. He was picked off trying to steal second. Tyler Heck's single brought in Esposito and then Heck stole second. Flavin's single scored Heck.
 
RPI added one run in the second inning. They would add three more in the six inning to take a 4-2 lead. Union would get one run back when Dan Wolfe's groundout to third scored Dan Minnes
 
Esposito's homer tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh. Katz-Wicks then singled. Heck flied out to left. Flavin doubled which advanced Katz-Wicks to third. Campisi's day was done and he was replaced by Alex Sardo. Anthony Cassese singled to score Katz-Wicks and give the Dutchmen the lead. Cassese stole second to put runners on second and third. PJ Mugford grounded out unassisted to first base and that scored Flavin to make it 6-4 Union.
 
The Engineers got two men on base in the top of the eighth. McLaughlin was replaced by Amboian who got Art Levenson to ground out and induced Tanner Boucher to hit into a double play to end the RPI threat.
 
After Amboian gave up a lead off walk to Erikson to start the top of the ninth, he was replaced by Rhoda who got Jonny Rio to hit into a double play. Kevin Prosicki was then hit by a pitch but was out on the fielder's choice to end the game.
 
RPI took the first game 9-5. Andrew Beaule started for Union and went six innings giving up eight hits, eight runs (seven earned), five walks and struck out four. Dan Duval went 6 2/3 innings for RPI and gave up 11 hits, five runs (four earned), walked two and struck out four. 
 
At the plate, Anthony Cassese was 3-for-4 with a homerun, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Flavin was 2-for-4 with a run scored. Dom Calistro was 2-for-3 with a run scored  and John Moore was 2-for-3 with a RBI.
 
Art Levenson was 3-for-3 for the Engineers with a homerun, two runs scored, and two RBIs. 
 
RPI jumped out to a big 6-0 lead in the first inning. Union scored twice in the second inning to make it 6-2. The Engineers added one run in the third and one in the fourth on Levenson's homer to left field. Union would get a run in the fourth and another in the fifth on Casssese's second homerun of the season. One more RPI run would come across in the ninth to put them up 9-4. 
 
The Dutchmen rallied in the bottom of the seventh. After Heck fouled out to lead off, Flavin singled. Phil Kemp came in to pinch-hit for David Peretti and he walked. Calistro then walked to load the bases with one out. Cassese singled to center to bring in Flavin and make it a 9-5 game. The bases were still loaded for Mugford who represented the tying run at the plate but he flied out to right. Jason Griffith then replaced Duval and struck out the pinch-hitting Nathan Foster to end the game.
 
Union will continue its home stand next Saturday with a doubleheader against the University of Rochester starting at 12 pm.
