Dutchwomen, RPI split Liberty League softball doubleheader

Freshman pitcher Alyssa Wolejko hit a three run homer in the sixth and pitched a complete game seven hitter to lead Union College to a 4-3 Liberty League softball win over Rensselaer in the first of two games Saturday at Union's Alexander Field. In the nightcap, Pitcher Jen Bach led the Engineers to a 9-0 win with three hits, three RBIs and her 12th win of the season.

The Dutchwomen now stand 4-2 in the Liberty League and 13-21 overall. The Engineers are tied for second with Union at 4-2 in the league and are now 23-9 for the season.

In the first contest, Wolejko hit a two out, three run homer to left in the bottom of the sixth to erase a 3-1 deficit. It was her second homer of the season. Union opened the scoring with an RBI single by Samantha Chevalier in the first, but RPI tied it in the top of the second on a solo home run by Genevieve Falco, her first of the year. The Engineers got back to back two out RBI hits in the sixth to take a 3-1 lead. Sara Heller singled in Jen Shields and Falco followed with an RBI double to plate Bach. But in the bottom of the sixth, with one out, Carson Mehl singled to left. After a fly out to left, Chevalier reached on an infield single and went to second on a throwing error while Mehl went to third. Wolejko then hit her home run. She allowed one two out single in the seventh but got Shields to ground out to end the contest.

Wolejko won for the eighth time this season. She allowed seven hits and struck out five while not walking a batter. Chevalier had two of Union's six hits off Felicia Bua, who gave up six hit and also struck out five while not walking a batter, in her six innings of work.

In the second game, Bach gave up just three hits while not allowing a walk and striking out five Dutchwomen in five innings. Charlene Osmanski pitched a one-two-three sixth to wrap up the win, which ended in six due to the eight run rule. RPI had nine hits including the three by Bach, and three by Gillian McCarthy. The Engineers scored one in the second on an RBI single by Falco, and added two in the fourth with an RBI double by Bach and another run producing single by Falco. In the fifth, RPI plated two more with an RBI single by McCarthy and sacrifice fly by Bach. The guests batted around in the sixth with four runs on three hits highligted by a two run double by Bach. McCarthy had an RBI single and an error produced the additional runs. Amanda Blake gave up seven hits in 5 1/3 for the loss.

Union closes out Liberty League regular season play Sunday with a 1 p.m. home doubleheader against St. Lawrence. Rochester sits atop the league with a 6-2 record. RPI also closes out league play Sunday at Skidmore.
