Dutchmen Fall to Southern Vermont 13-9

Cassese was 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored

SOUTH BENNINGTON, VT-
The Union Dutchmen baseball team had a slim lead going into the eighth inning but host Southern Vermont scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning to win 13-9 on Thursday afternoon.
 
Cody Portin started for Union and went four innings and gave up five hits, two earned runs, and struck out two. Phil Kemp relieved him and went two innings and gave up two hits, one earned run and struck out two. Seth Roberts went 1/3 inning and gave up three hits, three earned runs and one walk. 
 
At the plate, Dom Calistro went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored, and one RBI. Justin Real was 2-for-5 with two doubles, two runs scored, and two RBIs. Dane Flavin was 1-for-5 with a double.
 
The game was scoreless going into the top of the third inning. Real reached base on an error by the Mountaineer shortstop and advanced to second. Nate Foster's groundout to second moved Real to third. Tyler Heck then reached on an error by the third basemen which scored Real to make it 1-0.
 
The Dutchmen scored twice in the fourth inning. After Matt Barretto flied out to lead off, Peter Mugford singled to right field. Anthony Cassese then struck out. Calistro then doubled which scored Mugford. Real's double scored Calistro to put Union up 3-0.
 
The Mountaineers scored twice in the bottom of the inning to make the score 3-2. They would tie the game in the following inning. 
 
The Dutchmen scored once in the seventh inning on a Tyler Heck RBI single. Southern Vermont scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to go up 6-4. Union would take the lead back in the top of the eighth. Mugford led of the inning with a walk. After he was picked off first, Cassese walked. Calistro then singled to put runners on first and second. Real reached on an error and advanced to second which would score Cassese. Foster's single scored Calistro. Katz-Wicks' sac fly would score Real to put Union on top 7-6.
 
Souther Vermont did their damage in the bottom of the eighth when they scored seven runs to go up 13-7. 
 
The Dutchmen rallied in the ninth. After Flavin grounded out, Barretto singled to center field. Mugford then grounded out which moved Barretto to second. Cassese's single moved Barretto to third. Calistro reached on an error which scored Barretto. Real's double scored Cassese. With runners on second and third, Foster struck out to end the game.
 
Union (5-6) remains on the road as they take on Liberty League rival Clarkson on Saturday afternoon in a doubleheader starting at 12 pm.
