Alfred sweeps softball, 4-3 and 1-0

Alfred University posted wins of 4-3 and 1-0 at Union College's Alexander Field Thursday afternoon. The Dutchwomen fell to 5-15 while the Saxons improved to 9-2 after this non-league doubleheader.

The Saxons broke the scoreless tie in the fifth of the nightcap. Shanna Ewoldt led off the inning iwth a doulbe. Melissa Montano pinch ran and after a strikeout and lineout to right, Molly Shephard drove home Montano with a single to right for the 1-0 Saxon lead. It held up the rest of the way by winning pitcher Chelsea Carey, who struck out nine and gave up five hits in the shutout. She improved to 5-1.

Jena Servidone gave up seven hits in her seven innings and struck out five. Becky Gronczniak had two of the Dutchwomen's hits in the game.

In the first game, with the Saxons trailing 3-2 after five, Angela Netta hit a two out, two run homer to center to give Alfred the 4-3 lead. Breeal Delgado singled to center and Netta then hit her first round tripper of the season.

Alfred took a 2-0 lead in the first game when Hana Gross had a ground rule two RBI double to right. The Dutchwomen took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth. Union sent all nine batters to the plate and scored on an RBI single by Carson Mehl, a fielder's choice RBI by Alyssa Wolejko and a bases loaded walk to Samantha Chevalier.

Wolejko allowed just four hits and struck out two. Callee Heywood had two of Union's seven hits against winning pitcher Nicole Hedrick, who improved to 4-1. Hedrick struck out three.

Union returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. for a non league twinbill at the College of Staten Island.
