Alyssa Wolejko struck out 13 batters in a two-hit shutout, and junior catcher
Nina Cervini hit a walkoff single in the bottom of the tenth inning to lead the Union softball team to a 1-0 win over St. Lawrence in the first of two games at Alexander Field. In Game 2, junior shortstop
Lauren Hoffman hit an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Union to a 5-4 win, its second walk-off victory in a row.
The Dutchwomen now stand 6-2 in the Liberty League and 15-21 overall. The Saints fell to 2-6 in league play and 11-19 for the season.
In the first contest, with
Callee Heywood placed on second base in the bottom of the 10
th inning,
Becky Gronczniak led off the inning with a sacrifice bunt to move Heywood to third base. Cervini followed with a sharply hit single to left center field, giving Union a 1-0 victory. Wolejko had her strongest outing of the season, retiring 26 St. Lawrence batters in a row from the second inning on. Her counterpart, St. Lawrence's Rachel Duffany, was nearly as impressive, allowing just five hits and one walk, while striking out one in 9 1/3 innings pitched.
Wolejko won for the ninth time this season, improving her record to 9-7 on the year. Cervini had two of Union's five hits off of Duffany, and finished the day 2-for-4.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Union used a late inning rally to earn a sweep. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Union starting pitcher
Amanda Blake hit a two-run home run to tie game at 4-4, her first home run of the season. Cervini led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a single, and pinch runner
Melissa Lee was sacrificed to second base by
Alicia Jones. After
Rachel Noall singled and
Carson Mehl popped out, Hoffman's single to centerfield gave the Dutchwomen another walk off victory.
St. Lawrence used a three-run fourth inning to take a 4-2 lead heading into the late innings. Leslie Stratton drove home two runs with a two-out single, and Lauren Weisbarth followed with another RBI single to help the Saints take the lead. St. Lawrence starting pitcher Megan Goodemote pitched six innings, allowing 11 hits and four earned runs. She was relieved by Duffany, who took the loss, allowing three hits and one run in 2/3 of an inning.
Blake picked up the win, her third of the season, allowing eight hits and four earned runs in seven innings pitched. She walked three batters and struck out eight. Blake was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Union will host Middlebury College on Tuesday in a doubleheader that begins at 4:00 p.m.
