POUGHKEEPSIE, NY– The Union baseball team ended the 2011 season with a pair of one-run wins against host Vassar on Sunday at Prentiss Field. Union won 6-5 in the first game and 3-2 in the second.
The Dutchmen finish the season 14-19 overall and 10-14 in the Liberty League. It is the most wins in a season since 2003. The Brewers end the season 14-20 overall with a 7-14 Liberty League record.
In game one, Union took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Vassar then erupted for five runs in the fifth to take a 5-2 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Vassar starter John MacGregor loaded the bases with two walks and a hit batter.
David Peretti grounded through the left side to score two runs and bring the Dutchmen within one run at 5-4.
Peter Mugford delivered the knockout blow with a two-run single up the middle to put Union ahead 6-5.
Quinn Rhoda surrendered a double to the warning track by Sal Costanzo but retired the next three to earn his fifth save of the season.
Andrew Beaule started the game for Union and went 4.2 innings give up five hits, five runs, four walks, and struck out three.
Matt Rogers earned the win for the Dutchmen with no runs and two hits in 1.1 innings pitched. Vassar's Zachary Prudoff was tabbed with the loss with one run on two hits in one inning of relief.
In the second game, Union took the early lead in the first inning when
Tyler Heck scored on a throwing error by Brewer starter Lawrence Flicker. Vassar tied it up 1-1 in the bottom of the inning
The Dutchmen added a run in the third on a
Dane Flavin RBI single. They would have the lead until the bottom of the eighth when Vassar pushed across a run to tie the game.
Union regained the lead at 3-2 in the top of the 12th inning as
Joshua Rothberg drove in
John Moore with a double to leftfield. Rhoda retired the side in the bottom of the frame to cap a 4.1 inning, no-run, two-hit effort to earn the win.
Flicker lasted six innings for Vassar with two runs on seven hits. Union starter
Brendan McLaughlin went 7.2 innings with two runs on six hits with four hitless innings. He struck out five.
At the plate,
Vincent Esposito was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Mugford was 1-for-3 with a double. Moore was 1-for-5 with a double and a run scored.
