Softball opens with win over Kalamazoo in Florida, loses to #1 Luther

CLERMONT, FL -- 
The Union College softball team opened the 2012 season with a victory over Kalamazoo and and a loss to Luther Sunday.

Union won the opener, 8-0 in five innings, but lost 4-2 in the nightcap to Luther. Luther entered the week ranked #1 in the nation in the latest NCAA Div. III Softball poll.

In the opener, freshman pitcher Allysson Staats earned her first career victory. She allowed just one single and struck out nine in five innings, as the Dutchwomen ended the contest with five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Dutchwomen had 11 hits and Amanda Blake was three for three with two RBIs. Lindsay Cohen, a freshman second baseman, also drove in two runs, and Nina Cervini had two RBIs in the win.

Luther won 4-2 in the second game. Cohen had two singles and an RBI to cap a great debut day for the freshman. Erika Hillenbrand had two hits, including a double, and drove in a run.

The Dutchwomen continue play in Florida on Monday with games against Trinity at 9 a.m. and Frostburg State at 11 a.m.
