BOX SCORE

WINTER HAVEN, FL
-  Despite falling behind early in the game, the Union College baseball team came back to defeat Sewanee University 5-3 at the Russ-Matt Invitational. The Dutchmen now sit at 2-1-0, while the Tigers fall to 5-11-0.

The Dutchmen were led by junior Tyler Heck, going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI. Sophomore David Peretti tallied a run and an RBI, while sophomore Vince Esposito and junior Dylan Katz-Wicks scored, as well. Freshman Ryan Atkins and sophomore Joe Bradlee each had an RBI.

Andrew Beaule started for Union, allowing six hits and two earned runs in six innings. The sophomore struck out five before he was relieved by freshman Matt McGavick. Freshman Chris Pignatello earned the win for the Dutchmen, while junior Quinn Rhoda earned the save.

Sewanee took an early lead, scoring two runs in the top of the third. The Tigers held off the Dutchmen until the bottom of the fifth, with Marshall Ussery pitching. Adam Schmidt would go on to earn the loss for Sewanee.

Union began their comeback when Esposito tripled to center field. The sophomore was able to run home after Heck singled through the left side. As Peretti doubled to left field, Heck was able to tally his first of two runs. Soon after, Atkins singled to right field, allowing Peretti to move the Dutchmen to a 3-2 lead.

The Tigers scored their final run in the top of the seventh. Ryne Sullivan was able to score after Allen Thigpen tripled to center field.

However, the Dutchmen would answer in the bottom of the seventh inning. With a single to center field from Bradlee, Katz-Wicks scored to retake the lead for the Dutchmen. Heck, now on third, sprinted across home plate moments later after a wild pitch from Schmidt was unable to be contained.

Pignatello and Rhoda fended off the Tigers for the remaining two innings to give the Dutchmen their second win of the season.

Union returns to action tomorrow, March 20th, to take on Hamilton College in a doubleheader.
