Dutchmen split doubleheader with Hamilton College

– The Union College baseball team dominated Hamilton College 13-0 on Tuesday, before falling 2-0 to the Continentals in the final game of a doubleheader. The Dutchmen move to 3-2-0, while Hamilton sits at 3-8-0.

During the first game, ten different Dutchmen tallied runs for Union. Tyler Heck again led the squad, recording his first ever collegiate home run. The junior earned four RBIs during the contest and scored two runs.

Appearing in his first start of the season, junior Seth Roberts allowed only three hits with no runs scored and struck out two.

Sophomore Nate Foster, who went 2-for-2, recorded a run and an RBI, as did freshman Adam Becker, sophomore Joe Bradlee and sophomore Sam Caruso. Scoring twice for the Dutchmen was freshman Anders Goetz, who also had an RBI. Freshman Joe Durante and sophomore David Peretti each had two RBIs, while junior Dylan Katz-Wicks recorded two runs. Junior Dom Calistro, junior Marc Douglas, and freshman Chris Cyr scored, as well.

Union began their offensive assault at the top of the first with a home run from Heck. With Katz-Wicks on base, the Dutchmen were able to take an early 2-0 lead. Four more runs were tallied at the top of the fourth, all of which were scored with one out remaining.

Cyr began Union's final surge in the top of the seventh, reaching second base on an error and advancing to third on the throw. Goetz, Cyr, Foster, Heck, Bradlee and Becker went on to score to extend the Dutchmen's lead to 13-0. Foster, Heck, Becker and Bradlee each earned an RBI, as well, while Durante tallied two.

Hamilton came back to control the second game, with Alex Pachella earning the win for the Continentals. Pachella allowed six hits and struck out four.

Making his first collegiate start, freshman Dan Friedman allowed only two hits with two unearned runs and struck out six. The rookie, who played six innings, was relieved by fellow freshman Matt McGavick for the seventh.

The Continentals took the lead in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs after an outfield error. Ben Goffin earned two RBIs, as Gabe Klein and Sam Choate each scored.

The Dutchmen will end the Russ-Matt Invitational tomorrow, March 21st, with two nine-inning contests. Union takes on Benedictine University at 11:00 a.m. and the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth at 6:00 p.m.
