SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team earned the first Liberty League win on Saturday afternoon, defeating Clarkson University 1-0 in eight innings. The Golden Knights went on to defeat the Dutchmen 2-0 in the second game of the doubleheader, moving their record to 7-3-0 and 1-1-0. Union is now 5-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.
Sophomore Dane O'Neil started the first game for the Dutchmen, allowing only five hits in seven innings and struck out five. Freshman Chris Pignatello relieved O'Neil to start the seventh inning, earning the win for Union.
The Dutchmen scored their sole run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Sophomore Sam Caruso kicked things off with a single to the Golden Knights' shortstop. He was then able to advance to second on a wild pitch. Junior Dylan Katz-Wicks moved Caruso to third with a single up the middle, earning his third hit of the game.
With sophomore David Peretti intentionally walked minutes later, bases were loaded with Joe Bradlee up at bat. The sophomore flied out to center field, allowing Caruso to score for the win.
Phil Kemp started in game two for the Dutchmen, allowing seven hits and two runs. The junior struck out six. Freshman Matt McGavick took over for Kemp at the top of the sixth, allowing one hit and striking out one.
Bryan Chudy pitched for the Golden Knights, allowing seven hits in seven innings and striking out one. Dan Lenney and Scott Morrissey scored for Clarkson, with Peter Clark and Tim Beninati earning RBIs.
The Dutchmen are back in action against Clarkson tomorrow, March 25th, at Central Park. The Liberty League doubleheader will begin at noon.
