SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team moves to 3-1 in league play after defeating Clarkson University 8-3 and 5-3 in a doubleheader on Sunday at Central Park. The Golden Knights are now 7-6-0 and 1-3-0, while the Dutchmen are 7-4-0 overall.
Leading Union in the first game, junior
Matt Barretto scored three runs and earned two RBIs. Juniors
Jason Cohen,
John Moore and
Dylan Katz-Wicks each tallied a run and an RBI, while junior
Dom Calistro and sophomore
Joe Bradlee each recorded an RBI. Junior
Tyler Heck and sophomore
David Peretti scored, as well.
Andrew Beaule started for the Dutchmen, allowing seven hits and two earned runs in five innings. The sophomore struck out five while walking two. Beaule was relieved by freshman
Chris Pignatello at the top of the sixth inning, with the rookie allowing one hit and striking out two. Junior
Quinn Rhoda earned the save, allowing zero hits in the final inning.
Union took an early lead in the top of the second, with Barretto reaching home after a single to left field from Calistro. Clarkson answered immediately, though, with Matt Jenack scoring minutes later after an infield error.
The Dutchmen were able to pull ahead again in the top of the fourth inning, with Cohen advancing to second on a wild pitch. Moore then doubled to center field, allowing the first baseman to score. With a single through the left side from Katz-Wicks, Moore extended Union's lead to 3-1.
After stealing second and third base in the top of the fifth, Barretto was able to add another run for Union on a wild pitch before Clarkson answered. Peter Clarke and David Kinney scored for the Golden Knights, with Kinney and David Wixted earning RBIs. Clarkson was now within one run of the tying the game.
However, the Dutchmen fired back in the top of the sixth. With a single from Barretto, both Heck and Katz-Wicks were able to tally runs to move the score to 6-3. Next up, Bradlee singled to center field and advanced to second on the throw. This allowed Barretto to move to third and Peretti to score. With Bradlee on second and Calistro now on first after being intentionally walked, Cohen was hit by the pitch, allowing Barretto to score Union's final run.
Pignatello and Rhoda were able to hold off the Golden Knights in the final two innings, ending the game at 8-4 in favor of the Dutchmen.
Seth Roberts started in game two for Union, allowing only six hits and two earned runs in seven innings. Pignatello relieved the junior in the eighth inning, allowing zero hits and striking out three. Earning his third save of the season, Rhoda again pitched the final inning, allowing only one hit.
The Golden Knights seemed to control the game, scoring three runs in the first inning. Jerry Coleman, Kinney and Wixted each tallied a run, while Wixted and Dan Lenney each recorded an RBI.
Union finally responded in the top of the fifth inning, as Katz-Wicks reached first base with only one out remaining. Heck singled, as well, with Katz-Wicks able to advance to third on the throw. The junior then scored as Barretto singled to right field.
After a defensive battle from both teams, the Dutchmen dominated in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead. With senior

Dan Friedman on first for Cohen as a pinch runner, Peretti was up at bat for freshman
Malcolm Kelly. The junior then hit his first collegiate home run as a pinch hitter for three runs to take a 4-3 lead.
Freshman
Anders Goetz scored Union's final run after a single from Barretto. Barretto ended the game with two RBIs, while Peretti finished with one run and three RBIs.
The Dutchmen continue Liberty League action this weekend, with two doubleheaders against RIT. The first contest begins at noon on Saturday, March 31
st, at Central Park.
