SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - After falling 2-1 in a defensive first game of a doubleheader, the Union College baseball team came back to defeat the Rochester Institute of Technology 7-1 at Central Park on Sunday afternoon. The Dutchmen are now 5-3-0 in the Liberty League with an overall record of 9-6-0, while the Tigers move to 3-5-0 and 7-10-0.
Andrew Beaule pitched for the Dutchmen in the first game, allowing six hits and two earned runs in six innings. The sophomore struck out seven while walking none.
Union struck first in the top of the third inning, taking an early 1-0 lead.
Vincent Esposito kicked things off by singling to center field and stealing second base. The sophomore stole five throughout the doubleheader. With a sacrifice bunt from junior
Dylan Katz-Wicks, Esposito was able to advance to third. Junior
Tyler Heck then singled up the middle to bring Esposito home.
RIT answered back immediately, with Jaren Bell scoring after a single from Kreag Bradley. The Tigers took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth, as Brian Brazee tallied a run and Tyler Ramotar earned the RBI with a single up the middle.
Beaule did not allow another hit for the remainder of the game, but the Dutchmen could not come back to defeat the Tigers.
Esposito and Katz-Wicks led the Dutchmen in game two, with the sophomore recording three runs and the junior earning three RBIs, respectively. Sophomore
David Peretti tallied his second collegiate home run, scoring for Union and earning two RBIs. Heck, sophomore
Joe Bradlee and freshman
Sam Caruso each scored, while junior
Marc Douglas recorded an RBI, as well.
Seth Roberts started the contest for Union, earning his third win of the season with only five hits and one earned run in six innings. The junior struck out five and walked two before he was relieved by freshman
Matt McGavick. The rookie struck out one in the seventh inning.
The Dutchmen jumped out ahead of RIT once again, scoring two runs in the top of the third inning. At the top of the fifth, Esposito again stole second base after singling to right field. With a double to left field from Katz-Wicks, the sophomore was able to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Tigers responded in the bottom of the sixth, with Walt Roman tallying a run after Ramotar singled up the middle. Despite cutting Union's lead to two runs, it would be the only time RIT would score in the game.
At the top of the eighth inning,
Marc Douglas would come up to bat with Bradlee on second base and junior
Jason Cohen on first. With two outs, Douglas singled up the middle to allow Bradlee to score Union's fourth run.
The Dutchmen's final damage would come at the top of the ninth inning. Esposito stole two bases before another sacrifice bunt from Katz-Wicks allowed him to reach home plate, moving the score to 5-1. With two outs, Heck singled through the left side then stole two bases to advance to third. Peretti then recorded his second home run of the season to earn two RBIs and give Union a 7-1 lead.
Junior
Quinn Rhoda held the Tigers off in the bottom of the ninth, striking out two and allowing zero hits.
The Dutchmen continue their homestand on Tuesday, April 3
rd, with a matchup against MCLA at 3:30 p.m. at Central Park.
