SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Sophomore
Sam Caruso tallied the winning run for the Union College baseball team, helping lift the Dutchmen to a 7-2 win over Southern Vermont College. The Mountaineers move to 7-24 overall, while Union now sits at 14-12.
Caruso led the Dutchmen with two runs, while junior
Jason Cohen earned two RBIs during the non-conference match. Junior
Tyler Heck and sophomore
David Peretti each recorded a run an RBI and stole two bases. Senior
Nicholas Ranalli, junior
Dylan Katz-Wicks and sophomore
Vincent Esposito each scored for Union, and freshman James Mulpeter tallied an RBI, as well.
Seven different Dutchmen pitched during the contest, with junior
Phil Kemp earning the win. The junior allowed zero hits and walked one.
Freshman Chris Kelly allowed two hits and one earned run in two innings, while starter
Andrew Beaule allowed no hits and struck out three in two innings. Junior
Quinn Rhoda closed out the game, striking out two and allowing two hits.
Union showed strong defense, allowing only five hits from the Mountaineers. Flanked by Katz-Wicks, the junior made several diving catches to keep Southern Vermont off of the board. After three innings, the Dutchmen had racked up a 3-0 lead.
The Mountaineers finally responded in the top of the fourth, with freshman Jarod Hayen stealing second base to gain momentum back. With a single to right field from junior Dillon Desiderato, the rookie was able to score Southern Vermont's first run.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Dutchmen extended their lead to 7-1 after scoring their final two runs. After Heck reached first base on an infield error, the junior stole his second base of the game to bring his season total to 26. Moments later, Caruso also reached first on an infield error, allowing Heck to score on the throw. As Ranalli stepped up at bat, Mulpeter and Caruso looked on from first and second base, respectively. The senior singled up the right side and was able to advance to second on an infield error as Caruso scored.
Freshman Sal Sciara scored in the final inning for the Mountaineers on a passed ball, but Southern Vermont was unable to rally against the five-run deficit.
The Dutchmen return to Liberty League action this weekend against RPI. Union travels to Troy, N.Y. on Saturday, April 21
st, for a doubleheader and the Engineers come to Central Park on Sunday, April 22
nd.
