SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – The Union College baseball team fell to the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 3-1 and 9-5 on Friday afternoon at Central Park. Despite late-inning surges in both conference games, the Dutchmen move to 14-14 overall with an 8-10 mark in the Liberty League. The Engineers now sit at 15-14 and 12-6.
Dane O'Neil took the mound for Union in game one, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in seven innings. The sophomore struck out three while walking two. Mike Campisi earned the win for RPI, allowing two hits in seven innings and striking out four.
The Engineers struck first, with Tanner Boucher scoring in the top of the second inning after Eric Kozak grounded out to junior
Dylan Katz-Wicks for an RBI. RPI went on to score in the third and sixth inning, as well.
The Dutchmen finally answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth, with
John Moore kicking off the action with a double down the right field line. After advancing to third on a balk, the junior was able to score on a passed ball to put Union on the board.
O'Neil struck out two in the top of the seventh to fend off the Engineers, but RPI's defense would remain strong to hold the 3-1 lead.
Phil Kemp started for the Dutchmen in the second game, allowing eight hits and five earned runs in five innings. The junior struck out two and walked three. Freshmen
Matt McGavick and
Chris Pignatello each pitched an inning, while junior
Quinn Rhoda closed out the game.
Earning the win for the Engineers, Dan Duval allowed seven hits and four earned runs while striking out five. Sean Conroy and Jason Griffith pitched the final two innings.
After doubling to left field and advancing to third, Katz-Wicks was able to give Union a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second after an infield error. However, the Engineers would respond at the top of the fourth to knot the game at one.
RPI seemed to take control of the game in the top of the sixth, scoring five runs to take a 6-1 lead. Kevin Prosicki earned two RBIs with a single through the infield, allowing Jared Jensen and Cody Vincent to score. Prosicki then tallied a run of his own, as Jonny Rio recorded a home run to end the inning. Kozak scored, as well.
Battling back in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Dutchmen cut the Engineer's lead to one run, with Moore scoring on a single through the left side from freshman
Anders Goetz. With one out remaining,
Tyler Heck tripled to center field to earn two RBIs as sophomore
Vincent Esposito and Goetz scored. The junior then crossed home plate after sophomore
David Peretti singled to left field.
Despite Union's late comeback, RPI scored three runs in the eighth and ninth inning to seal their win at 9-5. Griffith struck out three in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.
Continuing the weekend series, the Dutchmen travel to Troy, New York tomorrow, April 21
st, for another Liberty League doubleheader against the Engineers.
