GAME 1
GAME 2
TROY, N.Y. - Freshman Jared Jensen allowed just one run on six hits over 7.0 innings to lead the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) baseball team to a 6-1, game one victory before Union College battled back for a 9-8, come-from-behind win in game two. With the split, the Engineers are now 16-15 overall and 13-7 in the Liberty League. Union moves to 15-15 and 9-11 in the league.
After allowing a run in the top of the first, Jensen received all the run support he would need in the bottom half of the frame, as junior Tanner Boucher lined a two-run triple to center. Classmate Chuck Erickson tacked on an RBI-single to make it 3-1 after one.
Sophomore Andrew Kalish delivered a run scoring groundout in the bottom of the second. Senior Kyle LaVigne then hit an opposite field double, which plated Jonny Rio.
LaVigne added an RBI-single in the sixth to give the hosts a 6-1 lead. Rio tried to score from second on the play, but he was thrown out at the plate.
Jensen (3-0) struck out five, while walking just two to earn the complete game victory. Union sophomore
Andrew Beaule took the loss, surrendering all six runs (four earned) over 6.0 innings.
In game two, the Engineers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead after two. Their four-run first was highlighted by Erickson's Liberty League leading seventh home run of the season. LaVigne drove in RPI's sixth run with a single in the second.
A three-run top of the third brought the Dutchmen to within 6-3, as run scoring base-hits from freshman
Anders Goetz and sophomore
David Peretti.
RBI-singles from junior third baseman Kevin Prosicki kept Union at arms-length through the middle innings as the Engineers carried an 8-5 lead in the top of the eighth.
Union then broke out with a four-run inning to score the eventual game-winning run in the frame. Following a run-scoring groundout by freshman
Ryan Atkins, Goetz brought the Dutchmen to within 8-7 with a single through the box. Junior
Tyler Heck then delivered the big blow, driving home two with a base-hit up the middle.
The Engineers return to the diamond on Wednesday, when they host Williams College at Robison Field (4pm). Union faces the Ephs on Tuesday (3:30pm).
