RIT Game (makeup from Saturday)
SCHENECTADY, NY -- Freshman pitcher Allyson Staats hit a three run walk off homer in the bottom of the seventh to give herself the victory and Union a 4-1 win over RIT Sunday at Alexander Field. The game was the completion of a contest that got halted in the top of the fourth Saturday.
Union improved to 18-14 overall and finished Liberty League play with a record of 4-6, and bounced back after losing two games to Rochester earlier Sunday (9-4 and 4-2). RIT fell to 11-23 overall and made this game up after two losses earlier in the day at RPI. The Tigers finish league play at 3-7.
In the win over RIT, the game resumed in the top of the fourth after rain halted play in the second game Saturday. Union was leading 1-0 in this game but the Tigers tied it in the top of the sixth. Tori Nadow, who led off the inning reaching on an infield error, later scored wtih a two out single up the middle by Brittney Lavoie. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Erika Hillenbrand and Alyssa Wolejko had back to back singles Staats then hit a shot to center field for her fifth home run of the season and second of the day. She improved to 6-4 with the win with an inning of no hit relief.
Hillenbrand, Wolejko and Staats each had two hits. Nadow had two of RIT's five hits. In the three games for the day, Staats had a total of five hits, four RBIs and two homers.
Rochester swept the originally scheduled Sunday doubleheader to improve to 24-11 and to finish the Liberty League schedule with an 8-2 record, one game behind league regular season champion and tournament host RPI. Nina Korn had four hits for the Yellowjackets, and Nat Sassaman drove in three runs. Rochester had 13 hits in the opening game 9-4 win, and broke open a 2-1 lead with a four run fifth. Sassaman had a three run homer in the fifth inning and Grage and Korn had back to back homers in the sixth. Grage started and got the win with four innings of five hits and one earned run with three K's, and Sarah Wayson earned her first save with two hit ball through the final three innings.
Lauren Hoffman had two of Union's seven hits.
In the second Rochester game, the Yellowjackets came back from an early 2-0 deficit for the 4-2 triumph. The Dutchwomen got two in the first on a two run homer by Staats, but a two run double by Samantha Melvin in the second tied the contest for Rochester. The guests took the lead for good in the fifth on an RBI single by Katie McLean with two outs, and added insurance on an RBI hit by Meghan Hennessey in the seventh. Maddie Skellie allowed just one hit and no runs while striking out three for a relief win, her sixth win of the season. McLean had three hits and Hennessey two in the second game.
Union hosts New Paltz Wednesday for the final regular season home games. Rochester plays at Brockport Tuesday while RIT is at Geneseo Wednesday.
