SCHENECTADY, NY --
Freshman Allyson Staats was a perfect seven for seven with a homer and a walk off hit and also had a complete game win to lead the Union College softball team to a sweep over SUNY New Paltz at Alexander Field Wednesday. The Dutchwomen closed out the home season with a 4-2 win followed by an 8-0 win in six innings to improve to 20-14, while the Hawks fell to 13-23.

This is the 10th time in 11 seasons that Union has won 20 or more games. In addition, after the Senior Day games, catcher Nina Cervini, shortstop Lauren Hoffman and outfielder Erika Hillenbrand were honored for their careers.

Staats was three for three in the opener including a triple, and pitched a complete game five hitter to improve to 7-4. She allowed one earned run and did not walk a batter while striking out seven. Cervini, Lindsay Cohen and Kristin Schmidt each had two hits and Schmidt drove in two runs with a single in the second. Amanda Blake and an RBI in the third and Cohen's sacrifice fly in the fifth led to the fourth run.

Melissa Liotta drove in both New Paltz runs with a single in the third inning. Starter Amber Carozza took the loss, giving up six hits and three earned runs in three innings. Andrea Feeney had two hits in the leadoff spot for the Hawks.

In the nightcap, Staats starred again, and was in the lineup in left field. She was four for four with four RBIs including her sixth homer of the season. But her biggest hit was a bases loaded hit that dropped just in front of a charging left fielder in the bottom of the sixth to produce the eighth and game winning run. Her three run homer in the first inning was her sixth round tripper of the season.

Sarah Logan improved to 7-2 on the season, allowing just three hits in the shutout while striking out three. Samantha Chevalier had an RBI double in the third and Union had RBI singles from Alyssa Wolejko and Cervini while scoring the third run of the fifth on a wild ptich. Starter Meg Brewer gave up six hits in four innings for New Paltz.

Union will close out the 2012 regular season at SUNY Plattsburgh on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Dutchwomen will compete in the Liberty League Championship Tournament at RPI on May 4-6.
