ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The University of Rochester jumped to early leads in both ends of a doubleheader and held on to sweep Union College, 8-3, and 9-5, at Towers Field here on Sunday afternoon.
With the two victories, Rochester improved to 13-19 overall, 9-12 in the Liberty League. Union is 16-19 overall, 10-14 in league play. Union faces Skidmore next weekend and Rochester goes against RIT. The top four teams advance to the league tournament with the winner gaining an NCAA playoff bid.
Rochester scored five runs in the top of the first of game one, one of them unearned. Josh Ludwig hit a sacrifice fly. Tyler DeClerck had an RBI single and Ethan Sander singled home two more. The Yellowjackets sent 10 men to the play against
Andrew Beaule. Union got a pair back in the bottom of the first. With two outs, Tyler Heckk walked and stole second.
David Peretti singled to deep short. When the throw got away, Heck scored.
Anders Goetz singled, moving Perretti to third. He scored on a single by James Mulpeter.
The Yellowjackets added an unearned run in the second and scored two more in the fifth. In Union's half of the fifth,
John Moore doubled with one out.
Vincent Esposito walked and
Dylan Katz-Wicks singled to right, scoring Moore. Heck grounded into an inning ending 6-3 double play.
Peretti and Moore were 2-3 with one run scored for Union. Katz-Wicks and Mulpeter had RBIs. The Dutchmen stranded four in the opener, two in scoring position.
Beaule took the loss. In one inning, he allowed three hits, walked two, and struck out one. Four of the five runs he gave up were earned.
Dan Friedman relieved. In six innings, he allowed six hits, three runs (two earned), walked two, and struck out three. Corey King earned the win for Rochester. He gave up six hits, three runs (one earned), walked two, and fanned four in five innings. Alex Parker allowed two hits and struck out one in two innings of relief.
DeClerck was 2-3 with one run scored and two RBIs for the Yellowjackets. Sander was 2-3 with two RBIs as well.
In game two, Rochester freshman Rob Mabee navigated through an up-and-down six innings, getting plenty of support from his teammates top open an 8-1 lead through six innings. Then the bullpen had a rocky run and Union nearly came all the way back.
Down 8-1, entering the seventh, Union sent 10 men to the plate against two Rochester pitchers and scored four runs on three hits, two hit batsmen, a walk, and a misplay.
Ethan McGowan relieved Mabee to start the seventh. Esposito singled. Katz-Wicks walked, and Heck was hit by a pitch. That brought on Rochester closer Adam Sullivan. Peretti's bouncer to first was fielded by Nick Carlson. Sullivan was late covering the bag, and Peretti was safe with Esposito scoring and each man advancing one base. Matt Barreto was hit by a pitch, forcing home Katz-Wicks and cutting the deficit to 8-3.
Sullivan whiffed Goetz.
Joe Bradlee singled to center, scoring Heck, and keeping the bases loaded.
Phil Kemp's liner down the first base line was knocked down by Carlson, but he had no play. Peretti scored and the bases stayed full. Sullivan escaped, striking out Moore and retiring Esposito on a groundout. He retired eight straight to end the game.
Union finished the game with eight hits (two by Esposito). Katz-Wicks scored two runs. Heck was 1-4. In the third inning, he was robbed of a two-run home run by Rochester centerfielder Alex Caghan. Katz-Wicks singled and Heck followed with a long blast to deep center. Caghan ran back to the wall, roughly 365 feet from home plate, leaped, and caught the ball just above the fence. Union did not score in the inning.
Seth Roberts pitched the first six innings for the Dutchmen. He gave up seven hits, seven runs (four were earned), walked three, and struck out one.
Matt McGavick relieved. In 1.1 innings, he allowed two hits, one run (earned), and struck out one.
Chris Pignatello pitched the final 1.2 innings, He allowed one hit, one run (earned), walked one, and struck out one.
Rob Mabee earned the win for Rochester. In six innings, he allowed five hits, one earned run, and walked three. McGowan failed to record an out. He gave up a walk, a hit, and hit a batter. All three runs against him were earned. Sullivan picked up his fourth save of the season. He pitched three innings, allowing two hits, one run (earned), and struck out five.
For Rochester, Sam Slutsky was 4-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Caghan was 2-3 with two RBIs and one run scored. Carlson drove in two runs.
Union travels to Oneonta State on Wednesday, May 5th, for a non-conference contest at 4:00 p.m.
