Softball ends regular season at Plattsburgh; Union at RPI in league tourney Friday

PLATTSBURGH, NY
-- The Plattsburgh State softball team (27-8) swept Union College (20-16) 8-3 and 11-0 in non-conference action Sunday. The first scoring of the game came in the second inning when both teams traded home runs. Sam Chevalier hit a one-run homer out to right field to give Union the lead, but Erin Florkiewicz answered back with a deep shot to center field to tie the score at 1-1 after two.

After a scoreless third inning, Katie McNally and Michelle Iannone dropped shots just over the infield to bring in Allison Smiddy and Florkiewicz. Dana Mandery then stepped up and drove in McNally to extend the Cardinals lead to 4-1 going into the fifth.

Florkiewicz kept the Cardinal offense rolling in the fifth inning when she slammed a double into the fence and brought home Smiddy and Brianna Clarke. Brittany Marshall and Smiddy then recorded and RBIs of their own in the sixth inning. Marshall hit a triple into right field and brought Megan Price in to score and Smiddy singled up the center and allowed Marshall to score and make it an 8-1 game.

The Dutchwomen worked away at the deficit in the seventh inning and pulled back two runs. Allyson Staats hit a single with the bases loaded and then Amanda Blake blasted a double to the fence to make it 8-3.

Heather Loughran took home the win for the Cardinals after striking out five batters and giving up nine hits in six innings. Staats suffered the loss for Union, giving up 11 hits and eight runs in five innings. Lauren Hoffman had three hits for Union in the opener.

in the nightcap, Plattsburgh took the lead in first inning when Marshall scored on a Clarke ground out. Kayla Rabideau then laid down a bunt to bring Florkiewicz home and then McNally scored on a throwing error to second base to give the Cardinals a 3-0 at the end of the second inning.

The Cardinals continued their strong offensive display in the third inning when Clarke cleared the fences for a solo home run and then Iannone scored after McNally hit a fly ball out to left field which was dropped by the Union fielder. The Cardinals kept rolling when Mandery hit a double to bring McNally home and make it a 6-0 game.

Clarke added another two RBI after driving a low ball into left field that brought Price and Marshall home, while Iannone hit a line drive to right field, which allowed Smiddy to score. Kristin Nabor hit a sac-fly into right field to bring Clarke into score, before Samantha Tenney scored on a Mandery hit into right field to end another big hitting inning for the Cardinals and make it 11-0 and end the game early.

Ashley Marshall took the win for the Cardinals after striking out six batters and allowing just three hits in the five innings. Union used three different pitchers. Sarah Logan took the loss after pitching just over two innings and giving up six runs.

Union will play Friday in the first day of the 2012 Liberty League Championship Tournament. The Dutchwomen won the tourney hosted by RPI last season. Union will face Rochester at 4:30 p.m. at Doris Robison Field Friday, following the RPI-St. Lawrence game at 2 p.m. The double elimination tournament continues through Sunday.
