SCHENECTADY, NY - With six games remaining in the regular season, Union (13-10-5, 6-6-4 ECAC Hockey) returns home looking to regroup after two losses in the North Country this past weekend. The Dutchmen fell, 4-2, on Saturday night at St. Lawrence, following a 2-1 loss to Clarkson on Friday night, marking the first time that Union has been swept in the North Country since the 2008-09 season.
Union, which currently sits in a tie for sixth in the ECAC Hockey standings, will open the weekend with nationally-ranked Yale (13-7-3, 9-6-1 ECAC Hockey) on Friday night. The Bulldogs dropped a 1-0 decision at Brown (9-9-5, 5-6-5 ECAC Hockey) on Tuesday night, as Nick Lappin scored and Anthony Borelli made 44 saves in net to earn the win for the Bears. The Dutchmen tied both Brown (3-3) and Yale (2-2), the last time they met both teams on Dec. 7-8.
»Last Time Out...
Last Saturday, junior defenseman Mat Bodie had a goal and an assist but No. 18 men's hockey fell, 4-2, to St. Lawrence in front of 1,362 fans at Appleton Arena. Union outshot St. Lawrence 41-28 for the night, but allowed three power play goals in a game for the first time all season, including two in the first period, as St. Lawrence built a 3-0 lead after the first 20 minutes of play. Bodie scored a power play goal late in the second period, and junior forward Daniel Carr added a power play goal at 2:25 of the third period to cut the St. Lawrence lead to 3-2.
Sophomore defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere had Union's best chance to even the score, taking a cross-ice pass at the point and skating into open space for a low slap shot that Weninger gloved at 7:11. Freshman defenseman Sebastien Gingras was called for tripping at 9:11, and Wick drove the net, flipping the puck over Grosenick at 9:46 on the ensuing power play to put St. Lawrence back in front by two goals.

Union's success this season has been tied to the play of senior forward Wayne Simpson, who leads the team in scoring with 28 points (12 goals, 16 assists). When Simpson registers a point, the team has a record of 13-2-3. When Simpson is not on the scoresheet, Union's record is 0-8-2.

The Dutchmen have been solid on special teams play, particularly on the power play bettering impressive numbers from a season ago. Synopsis: No. 10 Yale (13-6-3, 9-5-1) has returned to its winning ways this season after a disappointing 2011-12 campaign. The Elis, despite losing three of their last four, have solidified their place as the No. 2 team in ECAC Hockey. In a series that dates back to Jan. 10, 1992, the Bulldogs own a 23-17-4 advantage over the Dutchmen. In the last five outings, Yale has a 3-2-0 record.
The last time these two teams met in January, Union earned a 3-1 win, it's first victory at Ingalls Rink since 2008. On Jan. 28, 2011, Union defeated No. 1 Yale, 3-2 at Messa Rink to earn its first win over a top-ranked team in program history. The two teams took part in the second-longest game in NCAA history when Yale defeated Union in a five overtime game, 3-2, during the 2006 ECAC Hockey Playoffs.
»The Last Meeting
Seniors Wayne Simpson and Greg Coburn each scored power play goals, as No. 12 Union men's hockey (8-3-4, 3-2-3 ECAC Hockey) tied No. 15 Yale (6-3-2, 3-3-1 ECAC Hockey) in front of 3,500 fans at Ingalls Rink.
Union took a 2-0 lead early in the third period on Coburn's power play goal. Coburn cut in from the point on a backdoor play and finished into an open net off a feed from sophomore forward Daniel Ciampini at 3:38 of the third period.
Yale clawed back into the game as Charles Orzetti answered just over a minute later, scoring on a rebound off a shot from Anton Laganiere at 5:25.
The Bulldogs would tie the score at 2-2 on a rush up ice as Andrew Miller fired a low shot on junior goaltender Troy Grosenick (32 saves). Grosenick made a kick save, but Gus Young was there to put in the rebound at 15:22.
Late in the third period, Union killed off Yale's eighth power play of the contest with Ciampini in the penalty box for roughing at 17:06. Union finished the night a perfect 8-for-8 on the penalty kill.
Ciampini nearly won the game for Union in overtime, beating the Yale defense down the right wing, but his wrist shot went over the shoulder of goaltender Jeff Malcolm (33 saves) and wide of the net.

Synopsis: Brown is playing its best hockey of the season in the second half, with a record of 6-3-1 in its last 10 games. While Brown is not a strong offensive club (2.50 goals per game, 39th NCAA), and have had trouble on special teams at 13-for-89 (14.6%, 44th NCAA) on the man advantage, and 66-for-84 (78.6%, 49th NCAA) on the penalty kill, they are getting strong play from their defense (2.45 goals allowed/game, No. 17 NCAA) and great goaltending.
Goalie Anthony Borelli is No. 1 in ECAC Hockey contests with a 1.27 GAA and .958 Save%. Borelli shut down the Union offense in the second and third periods in relief of Marco DeFillippo in a 3-3 tie on Dec. 7 at Brown.

The Dec. 7 game marked the 44th meeting all time between the two schools and the 41st since Union went to Division I in 1991. Brown leads all-time series 21-12-11 and 20-12-11 in DI play. The Dutchmen are 2-1-2 in their last five games against Brown. Union is 6-10-5 all-time against Brown at Messa Rink.

On Dec. 7, 2012, junior forward Josh Jooris had two goals and an assist, and linemate Daniel Carr added a goal and two assists, as No. 12 men's hockey tied Brown, 3-3, in front of 1,217 fans at Meehan Audtiorium.
With an extra attacker on in the final minutes of the contest, Brown's Massimo LaMacchia deflected a Dennis Robertson shot past Union goaltender Troy Grosenick (25 saves) at 18:53 of the third period to tie the game at 3-3.
Union maintained possession in the Brown offensive zone for the opening three minutes of the extra frame, and had multiple chances to win the game. Senior forward Greg Coburn's shot from the slot was stopped by Brown goaltender Anthony Borelli (16 saves), and Carr fired wide on a rebound chance.
Moments later, sophomore forward Daniel Ciampini could not finish a wrap-around attempt on Union's last good scoring opportunity of the game.
For the third straight contest, Union found itself in an early hole, as Brown struck first on a 3-on-2 odd-man rush just over midway through the opening period. Michael Juola fed Chris Zaires on the left wing, and Zaires skated across the slot, beating Grosenick over his left pad at 11:51.
Union responded with three consecutive goals to close out the frame, including two on the power play to chase Brown goaltender Marc DeFilippo (six saves) out of the net.
