Box Score 2 SCHENECTADY, N.Y.- Union College baseball senior and freshman pitchers
Dane O'Neil and
Jake Fishman stayed perfect on the season as the Dutchmen swept the first leg of their double header with Vassar in 6-4 and 17-9 decisions on Saturday afternoon at Central Park. With the wins the Dutchmen improve to a Liberty League best 11-3-1 in league play (18-6-1 overall) while Vassar drops to 12-12 overall and 7-7 in league play.
Fishman remained perfect on the season (5-0) as he went seven innings, allowing four earned runs and striking out six batters in game one. Despite a shaky fifth inning, O'Neil improved to 5-0 on the season while giving up eight earned runs and striking out two.
The Dutchmen got the early lead in game one as they drove in five of their six runs in the bottom of the first inning. Peretti started the offense with a single down the right field line to score fellow seniors
Sam Caruso and
Vincent Esposito. Sophomore
Jeff Grasso continued to knock in the runs when he singled to right center to score freshman
Kent Curran and advance freshman
Jake Fishman to third.
Joe Bradlee followed that by dropping a hit down the right field line that scored Fishman. Junior shortstop Ander Goetz finished off the scoring when he drove a ball to right field where the right fielder was unable to make the play allowing Grasso to score.
Union added one run in the third inning to take a 6-0 lead before the top of the fourth inning. The Brewers attempted a comeback after smacking home four runs courtesy of a two run RBI by Jason Garfinkel, a wild pitch and a Kyle Casey single to shortstop that scored Garfinkel Neither team would add a run in the final three innings as the Dutchmen held on for a 6-4 win.
Brewers' pitcher Joe Lovizio fell to 1-5 on the season after allowing six runs, four of them earned with six strike outs and hits allowed.
In game two the Brewers jumped out to the early lead after Nick Johnson singled to right center to score Brooks English. Their lead was short lived as the Dutchmen claimed a 3-1 lead after striking for three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to RBIs courtesy of Curran, Fishman and an error by pitcher Jonathan Hong.
In the fifth inning the two teams combined for 15 runs but the Dutchmen were able to increase their lead. The Dutchmen capped off their scoring in the bottom of the seventh inning by driving in six runs to bring the lead to 17-8. Vassar added one final run in the top of the ninth but the lead was too big to overcome as the Dutchmen won with the final at 17-9.
Hong fell to 1-3 on the season after allowing 10 runs, seven of them earned in 4.2 innings. Dave Robbins, Mike Koscielniak and Robert Winkleman pitched in relief of Hong. For the Dutchmen,
Matt Yonta pitched three solid innings of relief for the Dutchmen, allowing only four hits and striking out three.
Dillon Clancy finished things off for the Dutchmen in the final inning.
Curran was the leader on offense, driving home six runs on three hits over the two contests. Caruso continued his dominance at the plate, driving home three runs on a hit, and a walk. Esposito, Fishman, Egan, Goetz, Peretti, Grasso and Bradlee also had multiple hit days.
The Dutchmen return to action tomorrow when they travel to Vassar for the second half of the season series. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
