Box Score CASTLETON, Vt.—A three-run sixth inning proved to be the difference for the Union College baseball team in a 4-2 win against Castleton, Thursday evening at Spartan Field.
The Dutchmen move to 12-10, while the Spartans, who had their eight-game winning streak snapped, go to 19-6.
Senior outfielder
Kent Curran led the Dutchmen offense, going 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run scored.
Andy Labeck was also 2-for-3, producing an RBI.
First-year pitchers
Sam Mikell and
Josh Garber shut down a Spartans offense which came into the game averaging 6.46 runs per game. Mikell improved to 2-0, allowing two runs on four hits and seven walks over seven and one-third innings. Garber did not surrender a hit over the final one and two-thirds innings for his first career save.
Castleton pulled out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Dylan Bailey hit a two-out, two-run double to right.
After four scoreless innings, the Dutchmen rallied for three runs in the sixth.
Nate Olson ripped a double to left center and advanced to third on a
Jake Vesling infield single. Curran delivered in Union's next at-bat, tying the game 2-2 with a two-run double. Labeck put Union in front one batter later with an RBI single up the middle.
Nick Williams scored the insurance run in the top of the seventh, leading off with a double and later scoring on a throwing error.
Mikell and Garber did not allow a hit over the final two innings, securing the 4-2 win.,
Spartans starter Devin Hayes was tagged with the loss, scattering four runs on 11 hits over eight innings.
The Dutchmen return to Liberty League this weekend with a four-game home-and-home series against Bard. Union travels to Annandale-on-Hudson on Saturday before hosting the Raptors on Sunday (12 p.m.).
