With the spring sports season canceled at its very beginning (or before it even started, for some Union teams) due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UnionAthletics.com will spend the next few months spotlighting many of the Union seniors whose athletic careers came to a premature end.
Â
Molly Wiener was already well on her way to rewriting the Union women's golf record books, even without her final spring season of competition. Wiener owns three of the five lowest single-season scoring averages in program history and is the school career scoring average leader as well, averaging 86.68 strokes per round in 50 career rounds. Earlier this season, she and teammate
Lisa Spagnuolo both shot rounds of 78 on
day one of the St. Lawrence Invitational, matching the program single-round record as well.
Â
Off the course, Molly serves as Union's Senior Class President. The neuroscience major was named a WGCA All-American Scholar as a junior and is a two-time member of the Liberty League All-Academic Team.
Â
What has been your favorite moment as a student-athlete at Union?
My favorite moment as a student-athlete was breaking records over the past two years at St. Lawrence! Over this past season I was honored to tie [Lisa] for the school's lowest score at Union and the feeling of accomplishment I had for myself and how proud I was of my teammate was amazing. The year before at St. Lawrence, I also had a major accomplishment by shooting
the school's lowest two-day score, which was something I'll never forget!
Â
How has being a student-athlete at Union benefited you over the last four years?
By being an athlete at Union, I found a community that supported me both on and off the course. I met some amazing people that pushed me to accomplish things I never thought I would. My team was one of the major reasons I ran for class president last year and my coach supported me every step of the way over the past four years.
Â
What has been your most meaningful experience outside of athletics?
Running for senior class president!Â
Â
Who was/is your favorite professor at Union and why?
There are so many incredible professors at Union that it is impossible to choose one. My advisor Professor Robert Olberg [Florence B. Sherwood Professor of Life Sciences] has had to put up with my constant questions in and out of the classroom and for that I am extremely grateful!
Â
Do you have plans for post-graduation yet? If so, what are they?
I intend on going to PA school after taking a gap year. Next year, I will either be a
Minerva Fellow (I'll hopefully find out next week) or work as an EMTÂ for a year.
Â
What advice would you give to younger athletes about their time at Union?
Support your teammates through everything. They are your family at Union and the bond you have with them can be extremely strong if you let it! I made some of my closest friends I will ever have on the women's golf team and I can't stress how grateful I am for everything they have done.
