Chris Suter and
Sam Strazza of the Union College baseball team were recognized for their excellent play during the first full week of the 2022 season on Monday, with Suter earning Liberty League Pitcher of the Week honors and Strazza grabbing Liberty League Rookie of the Week recognition.
Suter and Strazza both played big roles in Union's series win over Clarkson University over the weekend, helping the Dutchmen take two-of-three games to begin the conference slate.
Suter did not allow an earned run in a complete-game win over Clarkson on Saturday, scattering six hits and striking out three in a 5-2 victory. He allowed only four hits over the final five frames after the Golden Knights scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, not allowing a runner to reach third base over the span.
On the season, Suter is 2-0 with a miniscule 0.69 earned run average and eight strikeouts in 13.0 innings of work.
Strazza had a strong week at the plate for the Dutchmen, hitting .393 (11 for 28) with a homer, two doubles, six runs scored and a team-leading nine RBIs in nine games last week. He had a big game against Elmhurst on Monday, going 3-for-4 with a homer, double, two RBIs and three runs scored, and also reached base four times with three hits and a walk on Saturday in a game-one win over Clarkson.
Strazza has started the year second on the team with a .419 batting average (13 of 31), leading the squad with 11 runs batted in and scoring eight runs.
The Dutchmen will return to action on Saturday with a conference doubleheader versus Skidmore College beginning at noon at Shuttleworth Park.
